Independent International Enquiry to Uncover the Truth

Pat Finucane. A name everyone knows. The 39 year old solicitor was shot dead in front of his family by Unionist Death Squad in 1989. His killing remains the most controversial murders throughout the modern conflict.

This week the PPS has stated that no RUC or British soldiers will be charged. This decision is outrageous and has been slammed by Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson John McDermott.

“Pat Finucane was killed by the UDA/UFF in his home on 12 February 1989, who acted in collusion with British military intelligence group the FRU, or Force Research Unit. The 3 main players in the Pat Finucane killing were FRU agents, working under the direction of the British military. Brian Nelson, an agent since 1987 had been given specific directions from his handlers. His remit was to infiltrate the UDA, and ensure the targeting of ‘legitimate targets’. Brian Nelson passed the personal details of Pat Finucane over to Ken Barret. Barret, a special branch agent, was also working within the UDA. It was Barret that picked the execution team for that night. Barret has spoken about how he received a phone call from a police officer on the 12th February telling him that the road was all clear, and that it was safe for Barret to proceed with the planned killing.

“After the murder, Barret returned to the UDA Quartermaster William Stobie and handed over the browning 9mm pistol that was used to kill Pat Finucane. Stobie was also an RUC Special Branch informer, under the direct control of MI5. Stobie disposed of the weapon used to execute Mr. Finucane.

“Both MI5 and the FRU are organisations directly answerable and under the direction the British prime minister. To say that the Crown Forces are innocent is more than unbelievable. I am in no doubt that it was the British military are directly responsible for this brutal killing.

“The "Stevens Three" report published in 2003 stated that rogue elements within the RUC and military in 'Northern Ireland' helped Unionist paramilitaries to murder Catholics in the late 1980s. However, in a statement on Monday, the Public Prosecution Service said no further prosecution would be brought against any individual.

“The Finucane family have been told that the state were involved in the murder of Pat, however they are now being told nothing will be done about it. This is a complete and utter disgrace, the British government have blood on their hands, we DEMAND that there be an independent international inquiry to uncover the truth.”

Ógra Shinn Féin comment on Tony Blair's appointment as Envoy to Middle East

Yesterday June 27th, British Prime Minister Tony Blair handed over his ten year premiership to Gordon Brown making way for him to take up a role as Peace Envoy to the Middle East.

Oisín Ó Dubhláin, Ógra Shinn Féin activist said,

"Tony Blair was a supporter and overseer of a brutal occupation of Iraq and he will not be judged favourably on this issue. Ógra Shinn Féin profoundly disagreed with his foreign policy. His new role as peace envoy to the Middle East is certainly questionable to say the least.

As young Irish republicans, while we should acknowledge the positive contribution he made to the Irish Peace Process, our job is to create the conditions in which the British sovereignty over any part of Ireland is removed and the relationship between the two islands is between two sovereign nations. We hope Gordon Brown and the new secretary of state Shaun Woodward will deal with the legacy of collusion and the will implement the outstanding issues from the Good Friday Agreement.

We in Ógra Shinn Féin sincerely hope also that the new secretary of state Shaun Woodard, a former NIO minister, shall become the last Secretary of State with jurisdiction in this part of Ireland."

"Tara's Story is Ireland's Story!"

‘The M3/Tara issue in county Meath is quickly becoming another Rossport’ according to Meath Ógra Shinn Fein spokesperson David Joyce.

The National Roads Authority has proposed a route through the Gabhra valley between the hills of Tara and Skryne. Former minister for Environment Dick Roche approved the construction of the road in his last days of office. Roche signed the bill. In spite of opposition from locals, archaeologists and other interest groups.

Speaking on the issue David Joyce of Meath Ógra Shinn Féin said,

“The whole idea of a motorway and interchange so close to what is an archaeological site of such importance is nauseating, Tara is of critical importance for Irish people as a symbol of national identity, it should be treasured and protected by our respective governments come what may. The determination of this Fianna Fail party and their ignorance prove that today’s Irish government care more for foreign investors than they do for the Irish public. The fact of the matter is the road can be redirected West of Tara . The redirection of the M3 west of Tara will cut the length of the motorway by seven kilometres, cut costs by up to 80 million and most importantly rescue one of Irelands most important pre-historic complexes.”

“What is certainly disturbing are the green party's excuses since it has entered government with Fianna Fail. Minister Gormley now claims he is powerless to stop the M3 from proceeding after its approval by the former minister. If the greens think that the Irish people will accept this blatant lie they are wrong, it is obvious that the building of the M3 was a concession made by the greens to FF in their pre-government negotiations. This is in stark contrast to pre-government greens that pledged to save the Gabhra valley, and even had it as one of their most important issues on their election manifesto.

“Another disgraceful note on this disgraceful issue is the proposed double tolling of the M3. This is further proving of Fianna Fails alliance to big business, the M3 that is funded by the public exchequer is going to be privately owned. As well as this commuters in Meath may have to pay two tolls on their way to work in the morning and too on their way home. This just demonstrates the power money wields in our country in this day and age.”

“Meath Ógra Shinn Féin pledges full support the campaign to save Tara and have the M3 rerouted away from the site of massive historical importance and to bring and end to the destruction to our nation heritage. ”

Filleann an feall ar an bhfeallaire a deirtear, ach ní bheifeá cinnte de sin tar éis an toghchán is déanaí. Tá an buachaill bó Bertie fós i réim in ainneoin na ceisteanna faoina airgeadais, an stáit dhá réim atá anois againn agus go leor fadhbanna eacnamaíoch agus sóisialta eile sna 26 contae. Ní hamaháin seo ach tá sé imithe níos faide fós agus iachall méadaithe a cur orthusan a íocann cáin, leis na trí phost nua sa rialtas chun na cúilbinsí a shocrú agus na heireball in airde le teacht chun cinn an Comhaontas Glas.
Ní hé Bertie an t-aon radharc pianmhar atá fós linn i ndiadh na toghchána. Tá áit fós ag an bPáirtí 'Daonlathach' sa rialtas. Is éacht den scoth é seo cuma cad a ceapann aoinne den grúpa seo. In ainneoin nach bhfuil ach 1.2% des na suíochán sa parlaimint acu anois, tar éis an scriosadh millteach a deineadh orthu, fós tá suíochán acu ag bord an rialtais. Filleann an feall ar an bhfeallaire? N'fheadar mé in aon chor?
Tá an scéal níos measa ná sin fós áfach. Sé an roinn atá faighte ag an dream nimhneach, contúirteach seo ná sláinte. Ciallaíonn sé sin go lámh saor athuair ag an sean-Aire Sláinte, Mary Harney, leanúint ar aghaidh le milleadh a dhéanamh ar pé codanna den gcóras poiblí atá fágtha sa stáit seo. Príobháidiú an córas sláinte, lárú na hospidéil, ag lonnú achmhainní riachtanach in ionad príobháideach, cosúíl leis an aonad raidió-teiripe atá san Oir-Dheisceart. Cé orthu atá an feall ag filleadh arís?
Agus cad in aon chor faoi lucht na heite clé? Tá an cuma ar an scéal go bhfuil siad bailithe seo go dtí an lár. Páirtí an Lucht Oibre, reidh agus ullamh dul isteach i gcomhrialtas leis na coimeádaigh i Fine Gael. An Comhaontas Glas anois istigh i rialtas le Fianna Fáil agus na daonlathaigh, beidh le feiceáil conas a éireódh leoithe sin ar an clé go fóill. Tá an Páirtí Sóisialach briste ar fad ach is dócha nach bhfuil siad imithe go fóill. Agus cad fúinn féin?
Tá díospóireacht doimhin, cuimsitheach, leanúnach ag dul ar aghaidh eadrainn ar fad faoi láthair. Tá píosaí insan foilseacháin seo fós ag déanamh anailís ar an toghchán. Baill den gluaiseacht ag iarraidh a dhéanamh amach an raibh an locht orainn, nó an ea gur oibrigh coinníollacha an toghchán inár gcoinne. Sé an dá rud a bhí ann is dóigh féin. Níor chabhraigh sé go raibh dhá rogha glan ós comhair na daoine ag dul isteach sa toghchán. Gan dabht chuir an 'squeeze' cáiliúl seo brú uafásach orainn agus níorbh é sin an t-aon rud a d'oibrigh inár gcoinne.
Dár le Dermot Ahern, d'fhéadfadh duine athruithe polasaithe Shinn Féin a dhéanamh amach bunaithe ar cad é a dúirt Fianna Fáil nach raibh sásúil. Sé fuirist dósiúd sin a rá anois agus é sáitithe siar sa tigh uaine arís. Tá ciall ar leith leis an méid a deir sé áfach. Dheineamar botúin sa toghchán seo. Tá sé tábhachtach dúinn sin a thuiscint agus na botúin céanna a sheachaint sa todhchaí. Sé an rud atá i bhfad Éirinn níos tábhachtaí anois ná an phairtí a thógáil ó theas. Caithfimid méid na gluaiseachta a fhás go mór roimh 2009 agus a bheith réidh don dúshlán sin. Caithfimid bheith láidir sa phobail, gníomhach ar ár gcuid polasaithe radacach sóisialach, agus a thaispeáint go bhfuilimid i ndáirire faoi an dá cuid den stáit seo a feabhsú.
Fillfidh an feall ar na bhfeallairí, nílimid imithe in aon chor.

Successful National Youth Camp '07

There was a large presence of Ógra Shinn Féin and young Republicans at the Coiste youth camp ’07. Activists from all over Ireland gathered in Ballintoy, Co Antrim for the action packed weekend of events. The youth camp included, Sinn Fein’s Martina Anderson who spoke on women in struggle with particular relevance to the women involved in the run up to and rebellion of 1798. This was followed by a question and answer session.

Friday nights' entertainment was provided by up and coming band, Paddywagon. Dancing continued late into the night and a great night was had by one and all.

Saturday morning came early for some of those who availed of the previous night’s entertainment with Paddywagon. The first item on the Clár was a trip to Murlough bay, where Rodger Casement asked to be buried before being executed for his role in procuring arms for the Easter Rising. The walk covering a number of miles, cleared everyone’s head from the night before and re-invigorated everyone for a day full of political activities.

Following the return from Murlogh bay, the main speaker of the weekend, George Galloway was introduced. He spoke at length of international issues, such as the war on Iraq , the Lebanon, occupation of Palestine and also spoke of his support for the freedom struggle in Ireland .

Moving on from George Galloway’s talk, there was a panel discussion on young people and politics, Daithi McKay spoke on behalf of Sinn Féin and he was joined by Matthew McDermott of the SDLP. A lively debate ensued amongst the political parties and was followed by question and answers from the crowd afterwards.

Next on the clár of events was the long awaited launch of a 'Youth in Struggle' film, which was made by Ógra Shinn Féin. The film pays tribute to the huge sacrifice made by Irish youth during the freedom struggle, and traces the role that republican youth have played from the formation of Na Fianna Éireann in 1909 until today's modern republican youth in Ógra Shinn Féin. There was a large attendance present for the launch and upwards of 100 DVDs were sold to those present.

With political events formally ended for the day those present gathered once again for a night’s entertainment with Whiry gig.

With an early rise on the cards the following morning for a huge mobilisation in Bodenstown, many took the opportunity to catch up on a nights sleep, shortly after the conclusion to the night’s entertainment.

Speaking following the weekend, National Organiser of Ógra Shinn Féin, Barry McColgan commended all involved in the successful youth camp,

"Once again, we have enjoyed, a very comprehensive clár and very productive youth camp. It is a credit to all who organised and took part in the youth camp. It was an action packed weekend, from George Galloway, the speaking tour of Murlough bay, to the numerous talks and debate it provided much food for thought."

“On behalf of Ógra and indeed all the young people that attended the weekend I would like to thank and congratulate Coiste on the youth camp. Having been organised successfully for the last number years it is a credit to Coiste. They are playing their role in educating the youth of today, which will be the leaders of tomorrow."

Large mobilisation at Bodenstown ‘07

Ógra Shinn Féin mobilised in large numbers for the annual Wolfe Tone commemoration in Bodenstown, Co Kildare at the weekend. Amongst the Ógra delegation was a bus load of activists who came from the Coiste youth camp, in north Antrim, on Sunday morning to make the commemoration.

A large Ógra contingent fed into the main parade which was attended by several thousand people and numerous marching bands. With banners, highlighting the Ógra Shinn Féin A.R.I.S.E. campaign and others with silhouettes of Bobby Sands and Che Guevara, they provided a very colourful addition to the parade.

South Armagh Ógra Shinn Féin also formed a part in the parade. Members dressing in Ógra raincoats marched in the main body of the parade from Sallins to Bodenstown Churchyard.

The main speaker the commemoration was Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams. In his main oration he said republicanism had entered a new phase of struggle, and whilst the party must continue to advance in the north the front line has clearly shifted to the south.

Mr Adams said:

“The last six months have seen groundbreaking historic political developments. Sinn Féin successfully negotiated an unprecedented deal with the DUP restoring the Assembly and all-Ireland institutions, now has 3 Assembly members on the new policing board holding the PSNI to account and in the Assembly elections the party increased its number of seats to 28 garnering 26% of the votes cast.

“Just 8 weeks after the Assembly elections the 26-county general election took place. Expectations were high, perhaps unrealistically so and whilst our vote increased by over 20,000 the party’s vote fell in some crucial areas.

“Young republicans are emerging as effective political leaders and need as of right to take up their places as we develop the public profile of the 26 county element of our national leadership.

“Sinn Féin is an all-Ireland party operating in two jurisdictions with their own political cultures and different political realities that have developed since partition. What we are attempting to is unprecedented.

“We need to build republicanism in both parts of Ireland making it relevant to citizens in the political conditions in which they live, whilst at the same time winning support for an end to partition.

“We are republicans. We believe people are equal and should be treated equally. We have put forward clear proposals on all these matters. If we really want to be in a position to deliver our vision then we must win support for it. That means getting better at what we do and learning the lessons of this time.”

Uladh Ógra Shinn Féin Organiser
2007 has been a tough year to date for Republicans. This has been no different for our young activists and for Ógra as an organisation. A tough, emotional and frank policing debate in the winter, led into an extraordinary Ard Fheis, a historic decision and two elections to boot. An action packed 6 months, I’m sure we would all agree!
With the decision taken by the Ógra membership at a Special National Congress, preceding the extraordinary Ard Fheis, to adopt a different position than the Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle, no one knew what future loomed ahead for Ógra. But what has emerged since then has been a process of building, and a move from strength to strength for Ógra.
A 6 month long national campaign titled ARISE (Anti- Racism, Imperialism, Sectarianism and Exploitation), has ensured Ógra tackling a broad range of issues including Shell to Sea, Demilitarisation, Worker’s Rights, Political Prisoners, as well as international issues like the U.S. use of Shannon Airport, oppression in Palestine and the attempted criminalisation of the Basque Youth Movement - Segi.
The campaign has opened up new avenues for Ógra, making in-roads into various issues of relevance to modern Irish youth. This is part of the continuing growth and broadening appeal of the Republican struggle to the youth of today.
The past 6 months has also seen the 2007 Easter Commemorations, as Republicans throughout Ireland remembered the 91st Anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising. This year saw an unprecedented national mobilisation of Ógra activists, with more young people than ever before proudly contributing to the memory of all our Patriot Dead.
Ógra members ran stalls, took part in colour parties, distributed the national newsletter Glór na nÓg and distributed thousands of recruitment leaflets spreading the message of Republican Youth throughout Ireland.
There was a national Ógra statement read at over 30 commemorations nationally; receiving praise from republicans everywhere it was read. The statement outlined Ógra’s commitment to highlighting the issues and challenges facing young people in Ireland today. From student top-up fees to the use of Shannon Airport by US troops; from drug awareness; to complete British demilitarisation; Ógra set out its stall as it continues to grow and broaden it’s relevance to young people in Ireland.
We have also seen two elections crammed in, with young Republicans canvassing and campaigning in the Assembly elections in the north and the General Election in the 26 counties. Leaflet drops, youth canvases, DVDs, and Youth debates were just some of the actions which saw Ógra in the thick of the election madness. The election in the 26 counties also saw great initiative as activists produced the ‘Ógra Shinn Fein General Election Youth Manifesto’.
The past 6 months have been tough, hard work for Republican activists. But as always Republicans have shown leadership, and strength through unity. Ógra has accepted its challenge of building, and growing a radical Republican Youth Movement. Ógra continues to grow, evidence of the continuing popularisation of Republicanism in Ireland, and looks forward to being the generation that will inherit a United and Independent, 32 County Democratic, Socialist Republic.

Brits bid farewell to Bessbrook!

Today the 25th June 2007, sees British troops pull out of Bessbrook, continuing to roll out a 'programme of British withdrawal' from Ireland. This latest move should be seen as part of the hard campaigning and negotiations by Sinn Fein.
Bessbrook British army Barracks became infamous as the most active military helipad in western Europe, it was also the place were the last British soldier was killed during the conflict when a sniper’s bullet hit him as he manned a checkpoint.
Damian White of Ógra Shinn Féin Armagh said,
"The role of the British army has been to assist in the suppression of the nationalist people. British troops should never have had any role in policing the state. So we welcome this move and hope to see this continue until all British troops are out of Ireland."
"We also want to ensure all land taken away from communities by the British army when erecting these barracks, are returned to them, and hope the people of Bessbrook will get the peace that they want free from the low flying helicopters, and the obscenity that is a 'British barracks'."

Feminism - Challenging our preconceptions!

Ógra Shinn Féin will be taking to the streets and countryside this weekend, (29 June - 1 July) bringing A.R.I.S.E to an end as their National Campaign by holding a nation wide Weekend of Action on the issue of Feminism.

Here an article taken from the 'Ógra Shinn Féin Handbook' discusses the issue and importance of Feminism to Irish Republicans:

I’m not a feminist, but …”! This phrase is heard all too frequently from progressives and, sadly, republicans are no exception. Many young people have come to view feminism as at best outmoded and unnecessary, at worst “anti-male”. This is no accident – for as long as feminism has existed, its opponents have tried to portray it in these terms. It’s important to remember that those opponents are, by and large, the same people who oppose equality for ethnic minorities and the working class.

So let’s look at what feminism is. Its most basic definition, found in any dictionary, is the belief in equality of the sexes. What republican could disagree with that? It’s written into the 1916 Proclamation and the Democratic Programme of the First Dáil. Connolly, Pearse and MacDonagh all explicitly advocated equal rights for women. And, of course, republican women such as Constance Markievicz and Hannah Sheehy-Skeffington openly aligned themselves with the cause of gender equality. The men and women of 1916 recognised that the Republic’s guarantee of “equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens” meant little if it excluded 50% of the population. That’s as true today as it was then – and despite undeniable advances in recent years, this goal has yet to be achieved.

Just as important is the question of what feminism isn't. It isn't a set of rules governing how women should dress, the words we should use or our romantic and sexual relationships. Feminists can and do disagree on a variety of issues - including the origin of patriarchy, the use of quotas to combat discrimination, and pornography/sex work. The media tend to single out women with the most extreme positions on these issues and portray them as representative of all feminists. Ask yourself whose agenda this serves.

So if the goal is equality for everyone, why the need for the term “feminist”? Two reasons. First, because it’s important to keep the issue of gender equality to the forefront of the equality agenda. It’s the oldest form of discrimination after all - and often the most easily overlooked. And second, because downplaying the importance of feminism ultimately feeds into a reactionary agenda which actively opposes equality.

Republicanism is indivisible from feminism just as it is indivisible from socialism, anti-racism and anti-sectarianism. Republicans would not hesitate to describe ourselves in those terms - neither should we hesitate to call ourselves feminists.

Mol an Ógra agus tiocfaidh siad!

(Ógra on the March!)

Peader de Bluit

Tá seanfhocal ciallmhar sa Gaeilge a deir, "Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí". Tá nath ábharaín éagsúil ag an gluaiseacht seo áfach. Is minic na laethanta go gcloistear á rá, "Mol an Ógra agus tiocfaidh siad". Tá an meoin seo ag fás le tamaill agus an t-aos óg sa gluaiseacht ag iarraidh tógáil, agus béim a cur ar pholaitíocht óige. Sé sin le rá go mbeadh inchur níos mó ag an t-aos óg, todhchaí na gluaiseachta agus na tíre, i gcúrsaí ar leith.

Bhí eachtra mar seo ag teacht le tamaill. Cuireadh cosa leis ag an Ard Fheis i 2006 áfach, nuair a sheas baill den eite ógra suas le linn an díospóireacht póilíneachta. Bhí an dream seo ag cur in iúl go raibh siad glan i gcoinne plean ar bith chun athrú a dhéanamh ar stad na gluaiseachta ó thaobh póilíneacht de. Lean seo ar aghaidh go dtí tús na bliana seo nuair a d'fhoilsigh Ógra plean éagsúil ó líne an phairtí ag iarraidh reifreann a gríosadh sa gluaiseacht. Ní raibh ar an lá, thuill siad níos mó meas dóibh féin in dhiadh sin áfach, ag glacadh le rogha daonlathach an ballraíocht.

Cén iontas é áfach go bhfuil an dream óg poblachtánaithe seo ag iarraidh ainm a dhéanamh dóibhféin mar grúpa cumasach a bhfuil ciall acu leis. Nár tháinig ceannasaíocht an lae inniu chun cinn agus iad féin óg a dhóthain. Ní dócha áfach go bhfuil coup d'état in ann dúinn tá samhradh i bhfad ró-gnóthach ós comhair an grúpa seo gan bacaint le saol leadránach na polaitíochta.

Le sé mhí anuas bhí feahtas ar siúl againne darb ainm ARISE. Bhíomar an polaitíocht óige céana a spreagadh ar bhonn náisiúnta agus idirnáisiúnta. D'éirigh go han-mhaith linn i rith an tréimhse sin agus sinn anois ag tabhairt ár n-aghaidheanna ar fhaeachtas úrnua chun an t-aos óg a mhealladh chuig an polaitíocht shóisialach, radacach a ofráilimid.

Is cinnte áfach go bhfuil cáil an t-aos óg ag ardú i réim. Ritheadh rún ag an Ard Fheis deiridh ag moladh Ógra as an obair a bhí déanta acu le blian anuas. Nuair a chonaic roinnt dúinn an rún sin ar Chlár na hArd Fheise ní mó ná iontas a bhí orainn, ach breá sásta glacadh leis an moladh an t-am céanna. Chinneamar áfach glacadh leis an moladh seo go ciúin sibhialta ar an ábhar nach raibh rún den t-ord céanna curtha chun cinn againne ag an Comhdháil Náisiúnta.

Tá nod ann leis insan rún a ritheadh ag an Ard Fheis i mbliana. Má táimid ag iarraidh go mbeadh an gluaiseacht seo láidir sa todhchaí, tá sé riachtanach go mbeadh Ógra láidir anois. Tá sé seo thar a bheith tábhachtach mar in ainneoin an dian-obair atá ar siúl ag cumainn Ógra faoi láthair níl siad i ngach uile áit timpeall na tíre go fóill. Bí cinnte go bhfuil Oifigeach Ógra, is cuma cén aois iad i ngach uile comhairle ceantar agus cumann. Bíodh sé mar aidhm agaibh ins na míonna atá le teacht an t-aos óg a spreagadh agus a mhealladh chuig Sinn Féin.

Mol an Ógra agus tiocfaidh siad!

'The Voice of Ógra Shinn Féin!'

Liam Lappin, the lead singer with popular traditional band Paddywagon has written and produced a song about Ógra Shinn Féin.

The song which is titled ‘The Voice of Ógra Shinn Féin’, broadly describes the 10 years of Ógra, the actions and the role they play in Ireland’s freedom struggle, and traces its history back to Na Fianna Éireann formed in 1909.

The song writer Liam Lappin said that he got inspiration for the song from seeing the strong, vibrant display of Ógra Shinn Féin at last year’s National Hungerstrike Rally.

He said,

“At last year’s Hungerstrike Rally there were hundred’s of young republicans’ marching proudly as Ógra Shinn Féin, I wanted to write a song that captured the strong spirit that I witnessed that day.”

“A lot of songs rightly trace the history of the republican struggle, and the role the youth have played. I wanted to write a song that remembers the part that Ógra Shinn Féin are playing in the struggle today.”

Spark Editor Barry McNally urged people to submit ideas and designs on the logo,
“Currently we are busy putting the magazine together. We were wondering on how to get ordinary activists and supporters involved in the process of re-launching the magazine. So we have come up with the idea of allowing activists and supporters to design potential logos for Spark.”
“The design and colour scheme for the logos are entirely up to the person’s discretion. However there is a deadline of 4th July for all submissions.”

Todhchaí na Gaeilge ó thuaidh

Senan MacAoidh

Tá stádas na Gaeilge i dtuaisceart na hÉireann níos fearr anois ná a bhí ariamh ó aimsir an chríochdheighilt. Tá pobal Gaeilge bríomhar in iarthar Bhéal Feirste a bhfuil ag dul ó neart go neart comh maith le na mílte taobh amuigh den cathair mór a labhrann Gaeilge. Bunaíodh an chéad Gaeltacht uirbeach in iarthar Bhéal Feirste, is rud iontach é sin do Ghaeil san tuaisceart agus ba cheart go mbeidh misneach orainn uilig a bhfuil ag súil le todhchaí maith d’ár dteanga.

Tá cuid rudaí a bheith orainn a bhaint amach ionnas go leanfaí leis an fás. Go bunúsach caithfidh muid cearta na nGael a choasaint tríd reachtaíoct dearfach a thabhairt isteach. Tá acht gaeilge de dhíth ionnas go mbéadh gach cheart Gaeilge a úsáid sna háiteanna a bhfuil Béarla a úsáid anois. Leis an acht Gaeilge atá muid a labhairt faoi anseo bhéadh muid in ann comarsáid a dhéannamh trí Gaeilge le eagraíochtaí rialtais ar bith, na húdarás áitiúil san árámh, na póilíní agus na cúirteanna ‘ríoga’.

Leis an acht beidh muid ag cinntiú cearta teanga na nGael agus ag caomhnú an phobal Gaeilge a bhful againn. Ach chun an Ghaeilge a choinneál ar an bóthair ar a bhfuil sí anois caithfidh deis a thabhairt do ghach pháiste an teanga a fhoghlaim ar scoil. Níl go leor gaelscoileanna ann anois don éileamh sin san tuaisceart agus ar ndóigh an deisceart fosta. Mar shampla níl ach gaelscoil beag amháin i bhFear Manach, níl iar-bhunscoil Gaeilge ann ar chor ar bith.

Tá bacanna ann ar ndóigh ar fhorbairt na Gaeilge ó thuaidh. Mar is eol dúinn uilig tá na hAontachtaíthe Daonlathacha go láidir in éadan na hAchta. Chuir siad i bhforógra s’acusan go rachfadh siad i gcoinne aon reachtaíocht Gaeilge dona Sé Chondae.
Comh maith leosan d’fhógair na hAontachtaithe Uladh agus Jim Allister go rabhadar in éadan cothromaíocht teanga a thabhairt don Ghaeilge

Le Poots, an Aontachtaí daonlathach i gceannas ar an roinn cultúir, cinnte beidh sé deacair ach caithfidh muid an brú a choinnéal ar na húdarás ionas go mbeidh an bua againn. Gheall na hAontachtaí dá gcuid vótóirí go gcuireadh siad i gcoinne na hachta, tá an cumhacht acu, is iad an páirtí is mó, mar sin caithfidh muid an cath a throid ar pionsabail Aoine an Chéasta, ar cearta daonna, ar prionsabal an comhionnanas.

Tar éis dhá slógaí móra go lár Bhéal Feirste agus na mílte aighneachtaí seolta chuig an roinn cultúir, ealaíon agus fóillíochta caithfidh go bhfuil an teachtaracht ag na húdarás anois go bhfuil pobal Gaeilge ó thuaidh agus caithfidh an rialtas agus an tsochaí uilig é seo a aithniú tríd gach ceart teanga a thabhairt dóibh is atá ag lucht an Bhéarla. Is í an Ghaeilge céad teanga na hÉireann agus ní cheart go dtagtar deireadh leis an stádas sin ag an teoireann bréagach seo. Feicimid i gceann tamaill cé comh dáiríre is a bhí rialtas na Breataine nuair a shínigh siad Conradh Naomh Andriú agus gheall siad acht Gaeilge don tuaisceart.

Ógra Shinn Féin concerned at drop in University applications

Ógra Shinn Féin Uladh College Co-ordinater Michál Harkin, has said he is ‘concerned but not surprised’ that the number of applications for university places has fallen in the north, by 4.8% in the last year. He was speaking after it was revealed that student's loans for English, Welsh, Scottish and Universities' in the North has passed the 3 billion pound mark.
Mr Harkin said,
“We in Ógra Shinn Féin have opposed the introduction of Top Up fees at universities. We said that this would create a system whereby financial income and background would determine educational success. Top Up fees are deterring a lot of teenagers' and school leavers' from attending university. The effects of such a move will be noticed years down the road and not immediately."
"Indeed just yesterday similar fees were abolished in Scotland. Now that the institutions are up and running in the north of Ireland I believe that the same should happen here."
“The cost of living amongst students is very high and many have to work very unreasonable hours to pay bills let alone get an education. On behalf of Ógra Shinn Féin, we believe Education is a right, and we are calling on the unfair Top Up system to be abolished in the north of Ireland. Its effects, whilst not apparent now will become clear in the years ahead if such a barrier to education remains."

'Break the Connection' - Mobilise for Bodenstown '07

"That the influence of England was the radical vice of our Government, and that Ireland would never be free, prosperous, or happy, until she was independent, and that independence was unattainable whilst the connection with England existed."
So wrote Theobold Wolfetone over 200 years ago in bold defiance of British tyranny in Ireland.
Often considered the founding father of Irish Republicanism, Wolfetone although a member of the Protestant Ascendancy, struggled for Catholic Emancipation, and strived through his organisation the United Irishmen to ‘Unite Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter.’
Wolfetone led the brave, yet tragic, 1798 rebellion against the might of the British Empire, it was a case of peasants with pitchforks facing down cannon and cavalry, as Seamus Heaney wrote,
“Until... on Vinegar Hill... the final conclave.
Terraced thousands died, shaking scythes at cannon.
The hillside blushed, soaked in our broken wave.
They buried us without shroud or coffin
And in August... the barley grew up out of our grave.”
The United Irishmen, Wolfetone and the sacrifice of all who fell in 1798 is a continuing inspiration to Republican’s today. Their ideals and bravery leads us to remember that Sacrifice every year at Bodenstown.
Indeed Padraig Pearse delivering an oration at Bodenstown in 1913 said,
“Wolfe Tone was the greatest of all that have died for Ireland whether in old time or in new. He was the greatest of Irish nationalists. I believe he was the greatest of Irish men. And if I am right in this I am right in saying that we stand in the holiest place in Ireland and that the holiest sod of a Nation's soil is the sod where the greatest of her dead lies buried.”
So it is with great pride that Ógra Shinn Féin will march out again this year 2007, to commemorate Wolfetone, paying tribute and honour to his sacrifice, and pledging to continue to fight until the aspirations for which he died, are achieved.
Shortly before his death Wolfetone wrote,
"From my earliest youth I have regarded the connection between Ireland and Great Britain as the curse of the Irish nation, and felt convinced, that while it lasted, this country would never be free or happy.”
Let us mobilise at Wolfetone’s grave, gathering inspiration from this great father of Republicanism, and strengthen our resolve to ‘break the connection with Britain’ and to unite the people of Ireland, ‘Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter!’

This year’s commemoration at Bodenstown, County Kildare will take place on Sunday 24th June, with people being asked to assemble in Sallins at 1.30pm. The main speaker will be Sinn Féin Party President Gerry Adams.

Ógra Shinn Féin support Terrence Wheelock Campaign

ÓSF activists took part in a Terrence Wheelock commemoration on Saturday the 9th of June in Dublin City centre. A crowd of over 500 people were in attendance as the procession marched to Store Street Garda Station, the location of Terrence's death two years ago.

All of the speakers present demanded an independent public inquiry into how Terrence died.

Ógra Shinn Féin, Dublin Organiser, Ian Breslin slammed the Garda for their obvious attempts of a cover up, he said,

"This has gone on for over 2 years now, and we still don't know how it came to pass that Terrence died in a cell which was supposedly made safe, we still don't know why that same cell was renovated shortly after Terrence's death before a proper examination of the cell could be carried out, we still don't know why the Garda have refused to release the clothes that Terrence wore on the day he died, and we still don't know why people continue to die in Garda custody in unexplained circumstances."

"Ógra Shinn Féin is echoing the words of MEP Mary Lou McDonald who addressed demonstration, in calling for a full independent public inquiry into the death of Terrence Wheelock and John Moloney."

Ógra Shinn Féin March in 'Free Palestine' Demonstration

On Saturday the 9th the Irish Palestinian Solidarity Campaign held a national demonstration in Dublin to mark the 40th year of brutal occupation in Palestine by the Israeli state. It was attended by hundreds of supporters and activists.

The march took off from the Central Bank, stopping off outside the E.U. commission to highlight it's complicity in the occupation. There, a speech was given and a die-in held, to represent the massive cost to human life over the course of Israel's history.

The march then finished at the GPO with a number of speakers including Raymond Deane from the IPSC and Hikmat Ajjuri of the Palestinian Delegation-general in Ireland, and Dr. Bassam Al-Nasr of the Palestinian community in Ireland.

Ógra Shinn Féin took part in the event, spokesperson for the youth movement, Oisin Dolan said,

"We send solidarity to the people of Palestine who have suffered at the hands of Zionist aggression and hatred for far too long. We call for the withdrawal of support for the Israeli occupation by the European Union and renew our denunciation of imperialism and all it's by products."

Strabane gets the message 'Free Palestine!'

This June marks the 40th anniversary of the Israeli invasion of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The subsequent occupation and ‘brutal subjugation of the Palestinian people’ was the subject of a protest by Ógra Shinn Féin in Strabane on Saturday 9th June.

Spokesperson for Ógra Shinn Féin in Strabane, John McDermott, speaking from the protest said,

“Israeli violations of the norms of civilised behaviour include: Ethnic cleansing, land theft, Home demolition, Collective punishment, Prolonged detention without trial, Use of Palestinians, including children, as human shields, and State sponsored murder.”

“Israel pursues these policies with impunity because it is shielded by the UN Security Council veto of the United States and the moral cowardice of the European Union. It is up to us, the ordinary people, 'the people on the street', to force our governments to stop shielding Israel.”

To highlight these injustices Strabane Ógra Shinn Féin held a white line protest in Strabane town centre. John McDermott continued,

“The events happening in Palestine now remind us of our own past. Irish Republicans and Nationalists know only too well the effects of oppression and injustice. We held this protest to raise awareness for the ongoing tyranny experienced in the West bank, and in Palestine as a whole. We received a positive feedback from the people of Strabane, many unaware of what was happening in Palestine, and again, many relating it to past personal experience. We handed out over 300 leaflets, and we feel that the event was an overall success.”

The spokesperson continued,

“While carrying out our peaceful white line picket, we came under heavy surveillance from the PSNI. Two armoured vehicles and two marked Landovers occupied the town centre for the duration of the protest. Activists were videoed and photographed from numerous vehicles. Exactly what the PSNI was trying to achieve by this is beyond me. This was a blatant attempt by the PSNI to provoke the protestors into a reaction, a reaction they did not get. It appears that the local PSNI officers have serious room for improvement if they are to be accepted within the community. Sinn Fein and Ógra Shinn Féin totally condemn this blatant provocation observed on Saturday. We will be consulting with our members on the policing board and will also be taking a case to the Police Ombudsman for investigation.”

Éillíonn Ógra Shinn Féin Acht Gaelige Anois!

Ógra Shinn Féin activists joined Irish Language organistions, GAA clubs, schools and supporters from all over Ireland, this past Saturday 9th June, in demanding an Irish Language Act for the 6 counties.

Marching from the Cultúrlann on Belfast's Falls Road, into the city centre, the crowd chanted, sang and cheered, showing high spirits in the sweltering heat.

Ógra activists mixed with the crowd and engaged with many activists there to support the demand for an Irish Language Act. The crowd included Welsh Language activists and also members of the Basque community. Both groups knowing very well the experiences of cultural discrimination.

Ógra Shinn Féin Cultural Officer, Senan MacAoidh said,

"The Irish language has a rich history, but it is not confined to the past. The hundreds, upon hundreds, of young speakers, present on Saturday show us a bright future."

Mr MacAoidh continued,

"But this is fundamentally an equality issue. People from the Irish speaking community are entitled to be treated equally and their right to conduct their lives through Irish must be defended."

"The British Government must not be allowed to renege on their commitments, they must introduce an Irish Language Act for the 6 counties now!"

Election aftermath and the task ahead!

In a personal assessment of Sinn Féin’s general election performance, a founding member and the first National Organiser of Ógra Shinn Féin, EOIN Ó BROIN argues that the weaknesses and limitations of the party’s election campaign need to be corrected by an immediate return to community-based campaigning and radical republican politics.

There is much I agree with in Mícheál Mac Donncha’s election analysis in last week’s An Phoblacht. The most important question he asked was why Sinn Féin was not in a better position to weather the storm that was Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael’s election success.

Much discussion since the count has focused on the smaller parties being squeezed by the presidential-style campaign waged by the two larger parties and the national media. However, while this is certainly the case for the PDs and Independents, for the parties of the left no squeeze occurred. Rather Labour, the Greens and Sinn Féin simply remained stagnant. In our case progress was halted, not simply by a Fianna Fáil fightback, but by weaknesses and limitations in our campaign which with the benefit of hindsight we need to analyse, understand and correct.

Fianna Fáil’s gains were at our expense. Across the country, their percentage increases almost matched our decrease constituency for constituency. Our gains in 2004 were primarily at their expense, and our target seats for 2007 likewise. There is little doubt that their party strategists and local organisation understood the nature of the Sinn Féin threat. Fianna Fáil set out to convince these floating republican voters to return to the Fianna Fáil fold through a combination of the Enda Kenny fear factor, anger at the PDs, the rejection of Sinn Féin in government and effective, on-the-ground organisation. The degree to which this strategy succeeded surprised everyone, including Fianna Fáil, but clearly it worked. In effect Fianna Fáil set out to halt and reverse the trend set by Sinn Féin in 2004.

Sinn Féin weren’t squeezed by a presidential-style campaign. We were held back by an experienced Fianna Fáil electoral machine that understood its vulnerabilities and responded effectively. That we failed even to notice this in the course of the campaign is a consequence of our own organisational weaknesses and inexperience in the 26 Counties.

It is important to acknowledge the relative size and inexperience of our election machine in the South. It is equally important to grasp that as we grow our understanding of the differences between electoral realities North and South will become clearer.

Our understanding of our electorate in the 26 Counties, both core and potential, is only developing, as is our understanding of how and why they vote in both local and Leinster House elections. The assumption that we can simply translate positive feedback on the doors or previous election results into polling day gains clearly isn’t adequate.

In future we need to be more circumspect and more sophisticated in assessing and projecting our core strength and potential growth, and develop our constituency and media campaigns accordingly.

We also need to be mindful that our electoral growth has and continues to be built on slow, gradual, grassroots campaigning and community work. Our dramatic failure to poll well in Dublin Central, let alone win a seat, should be a lesson to us for the future not to deviate from what has worked in the past.

This was the first election in which Sinn Féin fought the public and media battle primarily on the basis of policies. A substantial reduction in negative media coverage coupled with significant progress in the peace process ensured that on television and radio, in the papers and on the doors, we were involved in policy debates about the economy, taxation, health, housing and crime.

On all of these areas we have strong, radical, left-of- centre republican positions. However, we clearly failed to defend these positions effectively. The leaders debate on RTÉ was just one of a number of interviews post Ard Fheis in which senior party spokespersons appeared weak and uncomfortable with our policy positions.

Our attempt to avoid the issue of taxation was seen by the media for what it was: an exercise in evasion. The pre-election abandonment of our policies on corporation tax, capital gains tax and a 50% upper band made us appear inconsistent to many, irrespective of their actual view on the policy.

More importantly, it also alienated left-of-centre voters, who chose instead left independents such as Brid Smyth and Joan Collins, almost costing Aengus Ó Snodaigh his seat.

The centre ground is a crowded political place. Sinn Féin does not belong there and should not be in the business of trading fundamental redistributive policies in the hope of short-term electoral gain. That’s a kind of politics that we should leave to Fianna Fáil.

If we want to build an Ireland of equals, we need to be able and willing to explain to the electorate exactly how much this will cost and where the money will come from, including those instances when increased taxes are the most appropriate course of action.

Without trying to spin our way out of what was undoubtedly a bad election, we nonetheless need to find positives from which to build for the future.

Firstly the most important fact of the election must be that the 143,410 people who voted for Sinn Féin on 24 May can now be considered our core vote. That in itself is an important achievement and a solid base to build from.

Secondly, in a number of constituencies our vote increased, most significantly in Donegal. All of this growth bodes well for the upcoming local government elections in two years’ time.

Thirdly, for those areas where growth was small or nonexistent it should be a good incentive to focus on the task ahead and immediately return to what we do best: community-based campaigning and radical republican politics.

Finally, and probably most importantly, we need a serious and open debate about the political and economic position that Sinn Féin wants to occupy into the future. Mícheál Mac Donncha was absolutely right when he said in last week’s An Phoblacht that ‘Sinn Féin is a part of the left in Irish politics.’

To those activists who thought that a shift to the centre would benefit us in this election, I would say that you were proved wrong. Avoiding and then abandoning sound policies in the mouth of an election is bad politics.

Sinn Féin should continue to develop and defend our platform as a radical, left-wing republican party, building Irish unity and an Ireland of equals. Fianna Fáil’s success in this election was made in spite of growing public discontent at the quality of public services. The absence of a clear and meaningful alternative was Fine Gael and Labour’s weakness. That is the space where Sinn Féin belongs and where our future growth is to be found.

Ógra Shinn Féin slam Batasuna Leader's Arrest

The National Organiser of Ógra Shinn Féin Barry McColgan, has slammed today’s arrest and detention of Batasuna Leader Arnaldo Otegi and Basque Hunger striker Inaki De Juana Chaos and called for their immediate release.
( Ógra activists pictured with Arnaldo Otegi)

He said,

“This is the latest manifestation of Spanish State oppression and violence in the Basque Country, a further demonstration of their constant frustrating of a fragile peace process.”

“The oppression wrought upon those who rightly fight for Basque Independence, has intensified over previous months and has culminated today in these very intentionally provocative acts of oppression.”

(ÓSF campaign for Inaki de Juana Chaos)

“Ógra Shinn Féin has travelled to the Basque Country twice this year at the invite of our comrades in the Basque youth movement SEGI. They have been banned, deemed a ‘terrorist organisation’ and have had their entire national leadership imprisoned for up to 6 years. We witnessed at first hand the brutality of the Spanish State and had our activists detained and searched by the Guardia Civil.”

“It is obvious from our first hand experience of the Basque Struggle, that although they suffer very direct oppression, the Basque people want a lasting peace, but the violence and unwillingness by the Spanish State has at times made this impossible.”

(Ógra activist Roisin McGreevy speaking at news conference in the Basque Country)

“Ógra Shinn Féin calls for the immediate release of Arneldo Otegi, Inaki De Juana Chaos, and the entire SEGI leadership. We also call on the Spanish State to end these acts of oppression in the Basque Country and to enter into a meaningful dialogue that will lead to proper conflict resolution and a lasting peace.”

“We launched an online petition last month calling for the immediate release of the imprisoned SEGI leadership; please add your opposition to Spanish State oppression by signing at: http://www.petitiononline.com/SEGI/petition.html

Jo ta ke!
