Smoke weed, support murderers!

Oisín Gralton Ó Dubhláin
Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin

An argument has been put forward recently which while obvious and has been the argument of republicans for years. Mary MacAleese and the Archbishop of Dublin among others are the newest to propagate it. It's a pretty simple idea, based on some very simple logic, if you buy illegal drugs, like cocaine, cannabis or ecstasy you are giving support to those who kill, extort, intimidate and exploit for profit. The same people who murdered Veronica Guerin, Baiba Saulite and Donna Cleary, the same people who murdered Rosemary Nelson, Pat Finucane and Sheena Campbell, are the same people the illegal drug user goes to for his or her supply. They are one and the same and the Irish middle class are supporting them in record numbers.

When you buy illegal drugs, it is nothing more than handing over money to the scum who are glamorised with nicknames and pictures by the likes of Paul Williams every Sunday. The common lowlives who prey on the weak and disadvantaged, who have no respect for human life, who are the most vile and unacceptable embodiment of capitalist greed.

So why has this been ignored for so long, why have the middle class users got off so lightly for so long when they are the buffer which strengthens the stranglehold of drug dealers on working class communities in Ireland. It is because it is the middle class who have the power, legislatively, we've all heard about traces of cocaine found in the Dáil bar toilets, and in the media, presenting drugs as a working class problem created and facilitated by working class communities. So students happily smoke their hash or "drop a yolk" and business people snort their lines completely disconnected from the reality of the trade they support, whether through ignorance, denial or simply not caring. So why don't you see arrests of middle class users and dealers, why aren't these people who are a perfect example to set treated with the full rigours of the law?

The facts are there, in bold lettering, If you buy illegal drugs you are a supporter of murderers and criminals and in effect you yourself are a criminal.

So next time you smoke a joint, think of all those murdered by drug dealers in the last few years, the devastation caused to Dublins inner city by the illegal drugs trade, then remember the people you are supporting, the John Gilligans, Paul Wards or Johhny Adairs, the lowest of the low....what does that make you?

Great article Oisin. A very serious issue nationally but especially in Dublin. Ógra the leading Irish youth organisation should be leading a campaign on this.

Let us not forget that it is not just the Irish middle class whom this problm affects. Due to the ever increasing supply of drugs like cocaine etc the price has gone down. This had lead to an increase in demand for it amoung working class also. Drugs are the scurge of ou community and we would be mch better off withou them

I found this article to be a bit overly-dramatic. While I am absolutely against the use of E, Speed, Coke Heroin and other class A's.. I think less harmful drugs like Hash are not problematic in society and the average hash-dealer is a far cry from being a murderer.

And let's be honest, you really wanted to get this article sold on it's shock factor more than anything - hence the "smoke weed, support murderers".

Why not address the real issues? Like the local handling of drug-related crime, or the crackdown on drug-dealers? I know of 3 heroin dealers in my small city alone and the Gardaí have not moved on any of them.

I am dissapointed in this article, from an otherwise good blog. For the record, I don't smoke hash. I don't even smoke cigarettes so my bias is not hash-heavy.

The same people who bring hash into Ireland bring in the heroin or cocaine. Local small dealers generally deal in only one or two drugs usually of a similar class but they are all part of the same industry.

Your local hashdealer is most likely not a murderer but he/she is a criminal and deals with other criminals and somewhere on that chain are the kind of people I listed.

This is only one article I can only deal with some issues relating to drugs. This is also a point I feel is generally ignored in place of individualistic approaches such as "its bad for your health" anti drugs arguments.

The fact is the irish middle class are funding the very people who they claim to hate and are shocked by every time they watch the news or read a paper, yet they support these people directly. Its the height of hypocrisy and one I think should be highlighted.

To the other writer I certainly would not ignore the scourge of the illegal drugs trade in working class areas, bu this is all linked as it gives support and succour to those who prey on these communities.

This article in my opinion has hit the nail on the head. It took someone to say what most of us think. Well Done Oisin!!

John from Waterford, the jist of the article is correct. The same people who are profiting from the sale of the hash (possibly not the pusher on the street but certainly the importers/barons) are also bringing in heroin and cocaine, so by buying hash people are funding the same scumbags who terrorise communities, pollute young people's bodies and gun down people on the streets.
As I am advocating in the discussion in the "Drink and Drugs - A National Epidemic?" thread, legalisation at least addresses this aspect of the drug problem.

Very interesting article. A firey opinion piece, which I thought was well written. It was dramatic, but sure so is the writer!! lol

Valid points are made by John regarding Garda response to these issues. It's also true of the PSNI. In my area, for example, an estate notorious for drugs and with known drug dealers not just living there but running the area; is only a stones throw from the PSNI station. And I mean literally, only a matter of yards.

One of these people actually occupies 2 houses. A semi-detach house which he converted himself in to a large home! im not even joking!

However John, the fact remains, these people need to be tackled by communities. Especially in the absence of effective policing.

I have also heard people complaining about the lack of Drugs awareness programs, the lack of effective policing etc etc etc
and I have also seen many of them taking drugs themselves.

I agree with the writer of this article, people who buy drugs are supporting the thugs, the criminals, the death squads; and although that maybe extremely hard to hear for many I believe its true.

Recreational Drug users are supporting these thugs

relation to hash.as uasual oisin great article i would agree with 90% of it, the fact is in america in the 20s and 30s it was the ordinary people who created al capone by ignoring prohibition laws, and drinking in shebeens and speakeasys, they were not harming anyone. But somewhere in that chain of supply there were murderers and gangsters too. Ive seen what drugs have done to my comunity at first hand and i am appauled.however i do think the article was sensationalist. P.S at the geneva opiates conference of 1929, egypt were delegated to look into the effects of hashish, before the findings were heard. Britain included hashish in the list of substances to be band...why? It might have something to do with egypts hemp/hash exports which at the time posed a serious threat to Indias cotton export market.also if your goana have a war on drugs have it against all drugs! not just those drugs you cant drink. bill hicks drogheda

What a pathetic crock of shit. Why not blame the governments who make harmless substances like Cannabis illegal in THE FIRST FUCKING PLACE.

After all, I reckon 'da man' is the highest up in the chain, right?

yea weed man it like, makes your skin fall off and your brain turns into metal and then a dinosaur eats your mom and then like, oh man then you do heroin and then man like oh man then you go buy a new mercedes.........

I smoked weed once and now my brain is metal, and I have a mercedes, and heroin is my moms uncles best dog and I like posting stupid crap on articles that are written by losers like you.

btw - nice drama about weed supporting murderers, what about those who grow their own weed and smoke it themselves, am I still supporting murderers??? lol, you people are wired on STUPID

Actually a valid point. Most weed is now grown locally, indoors in climate controlled "growhouses". Usually a residential building in your neighbourhood. The weed dealer today is different from 10 years ago in Ireland, when most cannabis was imported. Pure propaganda headline.

"Smoke weed, support murders" is a bit over the top. What if one was the grow ones own Cannabis? Regulation, not prohibition.
