No! 2 Student Fees Protest @ Magee

On Tuesday 2 December, all University of Ulster Campuses took part in a protest to abolish student fees.

On the Magee campus over 70 people took part in the Protest with a lot of those representing the Bernard O’ Hagan University Cumann, and Derry Sinn Féin.

Local Sinn Féin Councillor for the area Gerry MacLochlainn addressed the crowd,

“I am delighted to join with students today to demand a basic right to access to education for all on a fair and equitable basis. Education and training is a right not a privilege. It makes a mockery of any commitment to equality if students are forced to pay fees and incur debts that will hang around their necks for years into their future.”

"The fact is that faced with such fees and such debts significant numbers of young people from poorer backgrounds will not go onto further and higher education and will be excluded from the modern knowledge economy we seek to build here.”

The Magee Sinn Féin Society, Chairperson Adrian Kelly said,

“I am delighted that so many young students have turned out today, to show the likes of Reg Empey that we will not sit down and take this new proposed hike in student fees. We are completely disgusted at having to incur this large amount of debt by the time we live Uni.”

“We are also joining in solidarity with our student’s in the 26 counties in saying that no one in ALL of Ireland should have to pay for a basic entitlement such as education.”

Well done Adrian on getting the troops out for the protest. Would have been a joke without us!

I'm a bit confused here - is it Sinn Fein position that there should be no student fees?
