Cllr John Smyth
Antrim Borough Council
DUP
As someone from the unionist family who has suffered from 100 years of nationalist violence how would I feel safe living with you as a neighbour. For the safety and financial security of my family I need to live with the protection of Her Majesties Government.

Does the Councillor not realise that he is living with Nationalists now, at the present?
A few things are funny about this post...
- I'm confused, is this man is 100 years old?
- He is scared to live with 'you' as a neighbour? Who is the 'you' he referenced? Nationalists? Republicans? Catholics? Irishmen and women? Or any of the above?
- When he talks about financial security of his family, bearing in mind he referred to his unionist family, is he talking about the hundreds of unionists and loyalists that were bankrolled by the British government to be a part of the UDR/RUC, and is annoyed that this handy money is now gone?
- If he is so keen to live under the protection of Her Majesties (sic) Government, then why doesn't he move to Britain, where I'm sure they would be more than happy to look after him.
- How many Majesties own the government? Surely he meant Her Majesty's Government? A typical lover of all things English with no comprehension of the language...
- And funniest of all, despite his talk of suffering from Nationalist violence and playing the victim, Mr Smyth served a five-year sentence in the 1970s for UVF activities - source Irish News, November 8, 2002
At least he was honest, it shows that fear is a major motivation for them to keep up their conservative political positions.
Its sad that this man thinks he would have live in fear of his nationalist neighbours when quiet the opposite is true in most areas where he would be accepted as part of the community.
Every republican is bound to treat both traditions equally.
@ Anonymous 2 - Mayb the reference to living beside 'you' was directed at me as i sent him the e-mail! For the record, I reject any allegations that my neighbours have suffered under my neighbour-age....
I believe John Smyth doesn't have the cleanest past re: loyalist paramilitarism. Don't think he relied on HMG when he was at that... ...then again maybe he did...
Antrim has a catholic population of roughly 30-40%. However, the town itself is completely dominated by unionism-loyalism, seems visibly deprived and insular. An illustrative example is that the local knee breakers was funded for development at the expense of the only catholic housing estate. Close beside this 'ulster-scots association' is the DUP constituency office, one of 3 war memorials and a royal british legion club. A second illustrative example is that one of the local GAA clubs, both local catholic primary schools and some catholic households have come under attack in the form of pipebombs and hoaxes by the 'Real UFF' of whom one of the many local loyalist bars could help you identify, suffice to say, they may or may not work for the local council.
