A plaque is set to be unveiled in the Tyrone Garden of Remembrance in Carrickmore to mark the 100th anniversary since the foundation of Na Fianna Éireann. The launch will take place on Sunday 16th August; widely believed to be the date on which the youth movement was formed.
The plaque unveiling will be one of a number of events held in Tyrone over the weekend of the 14-16 August and will take place at 12 noon in Carrickmore. The same weekend will also set the first occasion that the National Hunger Strike Commemoration will take place in Tyrone. Galbally, the birthplace of Tyrone Hunger Striker Martin Hurson has been chosen as the venue for the main commemoration
Announcing plans for the plaque unveiling member of the 1981 youth committee Laura Gildernew said:
“The formation of Na Fianna Éireann was a hugely important development in Irish history. Na Fianna were present and took part in the Easter rising of 1916 and even though the latest phase of armed conflict it was young people through na Fianna who educated and organised young people. The Fianna Roll of Honour speaks for itself in terms of their courage and dedication.
“The Plaque unveiling at the Tyrone Garden of Remembrance in Carrickmore will feed into a wider national programme of events which Ógra have been involved in this year to remember the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Na Fianna Éireann. In fact, the night before the plaque unveiling, on Saturday 15th August we will be hosting a Dinner Dance marking the 100th Anniversary of the foundation of Na Fianna.
“We would urge any local people who would be interested in coming along to the unveiling or any of our other events to do so. Anyone interested in finding out more can contact osfnational@yahoo.ie or call 07885569940 ”CRÍOCH
