Oppose the extradition of Iñaki de Juana Chaos
Ógra Shinn Féin would like to formally state their opposition to, and disappointment with, the court ruling in Belfast on Monday which called for the extradition of Basque nationalist activist Iñaki de Juana Chaos to face spurious charges in Spain.
The evidence against De Juana is flimsy at best and the European Arrest Warrant contains no evidence of him having committed any offence.
The Spanish are attempting to charge him with "public justification of terrorists actions". The only evidence against him is hearsay from a Basque rally in San Sebastien
The rally took place only hours after he had been released following a 21 year sentence for his part in ETA's armed struggle.
At the rally a letter, allegedly penned by De Juana, was read out. At the end of the letter the Basque phrase "aurrera bolie" - which literally means "kick the ball forward" - appeared.
The Spanish state interperets this as a call for the continuation of armed struggle and as such issued a warrant for his arrest.
The Spanish government has a grotesque record when it comes to the treatment of political prisoners and a history of human rights abuses. During his 21 year imprisonment, De Juana was kept in solitary confinement for 17 years and systematically tortured. If Iñaki is extradited to Spain he will no doubt receive an unfair trial and be subjected to inhumane and degrading treatment by the Spanish authorities.
De Juana has seven days to appeal the court ruling.
STOP THE EXTRADITION OF INAKI!!!!
FREEDOM FOR THE BASQUE COUNTRY!!!!!!
