No-Side scare-mongering?

Aine Ni Dhubháin
Ógra Shinn Féin

With the Lisbon debate finally kicking off and with Sunday’s RedC poll result hot off the press it seems that certain Yes campaigners have got their backs up a bit.

Over the last few months the ever-neutral Free State media have done all in their power to paint those advocating a No vote as crazy, delusional, anti-Europe and, to quote the great has-been Taoiseach “Loo-Lahs”.

Apparently us Loo-Lahs do nothing but ‘scare’ the public into voting No.

Now that’s funny.

Since when has engaging in debate and offering the facts of the treaty ever been scare-mongering?

Our good friends in Fianna Fáil however, well that’s another story.

Far from offering the facts of the Treaty, the ‘Soldiers of Destiny’ would prefer to tell us all about how, if we vote No, the heavens will open, a plague of locusts will ravage our lands, the four horse-men of the apocalypse will appear to punish the insolent Irish for disobeying their betters and worst of all little Ireland will be reduced to a quivering wreck sitting in the corner of Europe like a little abandoned cat stuck out in the rain.

Speaking at the Fianna Fáil commemoration at Arbour Hill yesterday, everyone’s favourite has-been Bertie Ahern said:

'It would be a disaster for this country not to pass [the Lisbon Treaty].

It would have repercussions that will seriously damage us.'

Correct me if I’m wrong but it seems that the only scare-mongering here is done by the Yes guys and gals.

‘Seriously damage us’…sounds like a threat to me!

With claims that the Lisbon Treaty is going to solve the issue of Climate Change (lie) and the threat of serious damage to the country should a No vote be obtained being the basis of pretty much all of the Yes arguments, it leaves the door wide open for those of us who have read the Treaty, read the facts and who do not need to resort to such petty, frightened scare-tactics such as those used by an iar-Thaoiseach, to debate this Treaty and show the people of Ireland that this is a bad deal for our country and for Europe.

So far there has been absolutely no substantive reasons given to vote Yes as there is none, and with wider debate people are beginning to realise this as the latest poll results have shown, which led Ahern to make his latest unfounded, worried threats to the people of Ireland.

It is high time for the Government, and the broader Yes side to stop the lies, stop the threats and to stop trying to scare the public into doing as they say.

The people of Ireland will not be fooled.

NO! 2 the Lisbon Treaty!

Who has claimed that?

It would be a great help if Ógra Shinn Féin were to engage in sensible articulate discussion about the upcoming referendum rather than promote non-sensical, rhetorical, dribble like this. This kind of pointless immature attack on the opposite side does nothing to help the No side and in fact does damage to it. If you want to encourage young people to vote against the Lisbon Treaty you need to furnish them with facts and common sense resaons as to why they should do so rather than writing pointless articles like this. A bit of intelligent debate please Ógra!!

I think the author has touched on relevant and mature points. She has also highlighted the hypocrisy and double standards of the YES people. Has someone touched a nerve, are the YES men and women geting edgy over possible (likely) defeat.

No! 2 Lisbon and keep the articles coming.

Anonymous Commenter 1 - All the yes side have used the climate change argument as a reason for voting yes, and it is a lie, because the EU will have no additional powers under this treaty that they did not already have. The 6 words on climate change are window dressing, there is more in the treaty on space exploration in the treaty than there is on climate change. Maybe they're planning ahead for when we have to abandon the planet!!

Anonymous Commentator 2 - I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and guess you're in YFG! ÓSF and SF have been engaging on the issues. The purpose of this article is explicity to deal with the hypocrisy of the Yes side in accusing the No side of scare-mongering when by any objective measure the No side have been the only side engaging people on the content of the treaty! The quotes of Bertie and others are clearly veiled threats.

this is one of the mean arguments of the proposers of this treaty, most particularly the governmen campaign. in actual fact threre are only 6 words in this treaty which refer to climate change and it in effect does nothing to tackle the issue itself.

in response to the 2nd contributor, it seems that you are engaging in the only tactic that the yes side are capable of and that is to talk down and insult those advocationg a no vote. as for my contribution being a 'pointless immature attack' on the opposite side i think, again that there has been plenty of pointless attacks made by proponents of this treaty, ie calling No Campaigners 'Loo-Lahs'. name-calling will get you nowhere pal. I am always ready and willing to debate the facts of this treaty. if you had bothered to contribute with solid factual reasons for the people to vote yes then I would respect your contribution however you have done nothing but carry on with the same activites as the rest of the broader Yes campaign - childish name-calling and arrogent insults.
