Ógra Shinn Féin in Lurgan organised a town centre vigil today, Friday 7th November, in support of Irish Political Prisoner in the USA, Pól Brennan. Upper Bann MLA, John O'Dowd was in attendance showing his support and over 1000 information leaflets where handed out, raising awareness on Pól's current plight.
Mr Brennan is being detained in the United States by Homeland Security on what began as a mishap over a processing work permit. This has now developed into deportation proceedings. Mr Brennan escaped from Long Kesh prison in 1983, and since 1984 has lived openly in the United States.
Ógra Lurgan spokesperson Tiarna McCorry said,
“Pól Brennan was a political prisoner in 1983, it’s hard to believe in 2008 he is a detainee once again. He has lived his life openly in the US for over 20 years, and has fulfilled everything asked of him by the US Government. He is no threat and should be released immediately. We hope that today we raised awareness on his case amongst the people of Lurgan.”
Ms McCorry continued,
“Pól Brennan should be allowed to fight his deportation case fairly. He should be released now, to allow him to properly prepare his case. With the Good Friday Agreement we have seen the release of Political Prisoners, most from the prison Pól escaped from, in the spirit of this it is unjust that Pól remains in detention.”
