As a large delegation of Ógra Shinn Féin activists toured the Basque country, on Friday 17 October, activists back in Dublin joined in solidarity with the Irish Basque Committees to demand the ending of a deportation from Canada of Basque refugee Iban Apaolaza Sancho.
They held a protest at the GPO where they re-enacted Spanish torture techniques which Iban would undoubtadly face if deported.
The arrest warrant issued for Iban, was based on a testimony from a Basque nationalist who endured Spanish torture at the hands of the Guardia Civil. The false confession was later retracted.
Iban’s appeal to the Canadian authorities to prevent his deportation was refused and at 1.15pm on Saturday 18 October, Iban Apaolaza Sancho was handcuffed and shackled by Canadian Border Service Agents as they deported him to Madrid for torture.
