Mayo Ógra Shinn Féin launched Connacht’s Recruitment campaign on Sunday. Targeting Ballina, the group of activists leafleted houses throughout the town. Hundreds of families received Ógra literature and the response was unanimously positive.
Aimee-Grace McGuiness, a Mayo Ógra activist, said ‘The leaflet drop passed off very successfully and we are confident that it’ll inspire young people to join us in our struggle and join Mayo Ógra Shinn Féin.’
The Ógra contingent played an active role in the Gaughan Stagg commemoration, which followed the leaflet drop. The Ógra banner added colour to the march through the town and local Ógra activist Éadaoin Whyte read the proclamation.
Michael Gaughan and Frank Stagg, both of whom died as a result of hunger strike, continue to provide inspiration to all Connacht Ógra activists but in particular those from Mayo. Gaughan who died as a result of pneumonia, caused by force feeding, showed immense courage and dedication. Stagg also died on hunger strike and is one of many of Mayo’s inspirations. Mayo Ógra strives to show the same determination and dedication that these men showed.
