How do we Liberate Irish Youth?

How do we liberate Irish Youth?

How do we create a 'i care' culture amongst the youth of today - creating a generation of youth that feels self worth and understands that they have a 'part to play' in society?

What issues should be tackled by elected activists, community activists, political parties, youth groups and the youth themselves to ensure a confident vibrant youth movement in Ireland?

How do we achieve the liberation and empowerment of one of the most marginalized section of Irish society - the youth?

Can a broad, pro-independence, leftist mass youth movement be created in Ireland? And How? Thinking politically, economically, culturally and socially - how can it be achieved?

What is Ógra Shinn Féin's role in this?

A.R.I.S.E and find the answers!

I know that it's neither fair nor accurate to say that young people no longer care about the society and world they're living in but from my own experience I would argue that most young people in general are no longer itching to make an impact in it. Most of them have shoes on their feet and plenty of money in their pockets and in the Ireland that they are living in, thats all that matters to them.

I have recently heard reference made to a discussion document that was adopted at the inaugral congress of Sinn Féin Youth in the 90s which was entitled, Young and Independent!

This document looked at the concept of liberation in the many different spheres of life relevant to young Irish people at the time.

I believe the principal author of the document to be the then very young and always inspiring Eoin O'Broin, who is now Sinn Féin Director of European Affairs.

It may do harm to revisit the document and have a mini-conference to discuss it while giving an opportunity to activists to make recommendations regarding changes that may need to be made. I suggest that the document be relaunched in advance of the general election in the 26 Counties.

From what I am told Young and Independent was an excellent publication.

Lets look to the experience of other struggles for national liberation and socialism. SEGI in the Basque country seem to have been very effective in engaging large numbers of youth.

It has been stated by many that Irish youth, particularly in the 26 Counties, have largely disengaged from electoral politics but have taken a big interest in supporting causes such as those led by Amnesty International etc.

The numbers of young people on the massive Anti-War march which was held in advance of the invasion of Iraq prove that a chord can be struck if our message is presented in an imaginative way.

I agree with liam, there is a general apathy amongst youth, it is our job to awaken an interest in youth and the point of the poast is how we do that - so how do we liberate Irish Youth?

I definately agree that Young and Independent needs to be looked at again, I also think the new A.R.I.S.E campaign is very imaginative, but we need more social aspects to Ógra events. If we want to branch out to more youth, we need to be doing broad popular actions (although they shouldn't compromise our politics).

Let the debate happen!
