Solidarity with the Basque Country in Strabane

Ógra Shinn fein were active in Strabane last weekend highlighting the plight of the Basque people following a week of arrests in a massive operation waged by Spanish police.

Speaking following the weekend of action which saw protests and demonstrations nationally as well as internationally, Malachy Quigg, spokesperson for the Tobias Molloy Ógra Shinn Féin cumann in Strabane had this to say;

“This week we have seen a huge increase in the repression meted out against the pro-independence movement in the Basque country. 36 members of the Basque youth movement Segi were taken from their homes by Spanish police and are currently held in various locations throughout the Basque Country and the Spanish state. There are fears for the well being of these youth activists given the Spanish state’s record on torture of prisoners and human rights abuses.”

“Ógra Shinn Féin in Strabane leafleted the town on Friday evening raising awareness of the current situation in The Basque country, and also organised a banner drop from the ‘flyover’ bridge on the Derry road on Saturday, again highlighting the Basque cause to passing motorists many of whom sounded their horns in support”
