Ógra Shinn Féin to take action in response to devastating emigration stats

Ógra Shinn Féin will undertake a series of actions this week in response to devastating emigration statistics.

Announcing details of the actions Ógra spokesperson Luke Callinan said:

“These actions are occurring to highlight the fact that thousands of unemployed people are leaving Ireland due to the lack of employment opportunities within the state. Continuous inaction from the government in response to the Jobs crisis is without a doubt, the major factor behind these incredibly high figures.

“Despite headlines in the media heralding the end of the recession, the reality is that there are now more young people leaving Ireland than any other European country, more than 70,000 people are believed to have left Ireland in the 12 months before April 2010 and 120,000 are expected to leave over a two year period.

“Ógra Shinn Féin is demanding that action be taken and that the government initiate a stimulus package to get the country back to work. We will be carrying out a number of actions at Airports and Seaports around the state this week in an effort to highlight this demand.

“We need to see a push by Government to stimulate economic growth and to put in place comprehensive job retention and creation strategies so that we can dramatically reduce the flow of able and willing people out of the country. We need to see real commitment to job creation. Sinn Féin is the only party that has put forward concrete proposals to tackle the jobs crisis.“We feel it is time for young people to get angry and get active, and Ógra is intent to be on the side of young people in their fight against unemployment.”

Ógra activists will through the week leaflet and rally at the following locations across the state:

Sligo Airport on Monday 2nd August
Knock Airport on Monday 2nd August
Galway Airport on Wednesday 4th August
Dublin Airport on Wednesday 4th August
Rosslare Harbour on Thursday 5th August
Cork Airport on Friday 6th August

Actions will take place at lunch time at the various locations.

Ok this seems a bit of mad protest, but maybe it will get some attention. If it had been co-ordinated at the weekend it would have been somewhat better in terms of numbers and attention.

should this protest not be carried out throughout the island? I realise the importance within the south considering the figures, but emigration affects all young people and we should be highlighting this on both sides of the border. still a welcomed initiative though.

dont get your angle here lads.

Last year 65000 people emigrated. A mere 8000 more than who immigrated.

Last year only 8000 people left.

A bit more this year but immigration will still be high so its not like there is 75000 people living the country.

Some people are leaving and some are coming.

It all balances in the end.

Could you please explain why you believe that distributing leaflets in a co-ordinated action to highlight an issue that affects the unemployed people of Ireland is 'a bit mad'? If that is the case I must be a lunatic.

I wouldn't necessarily say that it all balances in the end.

This is the first time in 15 years that the 26 counties has had net outflow. We have the highest emigration levels in Europe (almost twice the amount of the country with next highest figures) and young unemployed males constitute one of the biggest sections of emigrants.

Anyhow the point is that young unemployed people are beginning to see their future outside Ireland. There are little or no job opportunities available and emigration is seen as a viable option

@Anonymous 2
On the other point, unfortunately no report on emigration stats from the 6 counties has come out since 2008 so we do not have up-to-date-figures available. However, when the next publication on migration statistics from the NI Statistics and Research Agency is available we will take a look at it then.

It's rather interesting that Ógra Shinn Féin, who are in favour of mass-immigration and the replacement of their own native people are interested in the emigration of Irish.

Emigrants will return but what are Ógra Shinn Féin doing about Irish jobs for Irish workers?

Ógra Shinn Féin are not putting their own people's interests first. The Irish have a right to self-determination, and an unequivocal and absolute possession of their country.

I'm inclined to believe the media are hyping up emigration but perhaps Ógra Shinn Féin know better.

There will be always Irish who will leave home for a short period of time.
