IRA Volunteer Martin 'Doco' Doherty commemoration

A commemoration for IRA Volunteer Martin 'Doco' Doherty took place on Saturday the 21st May, 17 years to the day when Dublin Brigade's Martin Doherty was gunned down by a British-sponsored loyalist death squad while heroically attempting to prevent a massacre in Widow Scallans pub in 1994.

A large crowd gathered in Finglas village for the commemoration parade to the grave of Martin at Glasnevin Cemetery. Those in attendance included many Comrades, friends and relatives of Doco, as well as many of those in the Widow Scallans on the night who owe their lives to Doco.

Ann O'Sullivan laid the wreath and newly elected Sinn Féin TD Sean Crowe paid tribute to Martin Doherty who was not only dedicated to Ireland’s reunification but to his friends, family and comrades.

Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson Saoirse Ní Chonaraín said a few words and read the poem Stars of Freedom by Bobby Sands to pay tribute to Dublin's bravest, Volunteer Martin Doherty;

"Doco would have been proud to see his son follow in his footsteps as a republican activist. Nineteen year-old Mick Farrell Doherty is heavily involved in Dublin Ógra and a member of the Ógra Shinn Féin National Executive and strives for the same objective as his father; a thirty-two county democratic socialist republic."

Mick Farrell Doherty thanked those who attended;

"I would like to thank all those who attended and the local Sinn Féin Cumann for organising the commemoration. Its just not good enough to commemorate my father’s life for one day of the year, all of us republicans must work with Sinn Féin and Ógra Shinn Féin, and help in achieving the republican goal until it is won, then and only then will we have really honoured Doco."

Comhdháil Ghaeilge Dé Sathairn!

Luke Callinan
Cumann Thomáis Uí Mhannáin
Ógra Shinn Féin
Baile Átha Luain

Na toghcháin thart agus breis is 400,000 vóta céad rogha faigthe ag Sinn Féin fud fad na hÉireann. An-éacht déanta ag an straitéis phoblachtach; creideann moll mór daoine san fhís atá againn d’Éirinn anois agus tá i bhfad níos mó ionadaíocht phoblachtach sa Dáil, sna comhairlí áitiúla ó thuaidh agus sa Tionól.

Seo é an uair is fearr dúinn mórcheisteanna na tíre a chuir roimh an rialtais ó theas agus chun ár seacht ndícheall beartais poblachtach atá bunaithe ar chomhionnanas agus ar shóisialachas a chuir i bhfheidhm sa tuaisceart agus muid ag tógáil ar na deiseanna atá bainteach le comhlachtaí trasteorann ar nós Foras na Gaeilge. Is cuid riachtanach den obair seo ár dteanga dúchais a chur chun cinn ar fud an oileáin.

Beidh Comhdháil Ghaeilge de chuid Sinn Féin ar siúl Dé Sathairn seo i gCumann na Múinteoirí, Cearnóg Pharnell, Baile Átha Cliath ó 10r.n. go dtí 2i.n. agus spreagfadh Ógra Shinn Féin poblactánaigh óga agus iad siúd atá suim acu sa teanga le freastal ar an Chomhdháil ríthábhachtach seo. Is mór an deis é seo cúrsaí Gaeilge a phlé ó thaobh polasaí, cur chuige agus cleachtadh inmheánach.

Le linn idirbheartaíochta ag Caisleán Chromghlinne anuraidh rinne Sinn Féin cinnte go mbeadh £12m ar fáil don chiste craoltóireachta na Gaeilge sna sé chontae chomh maith le £8m i gcomhair ciste infheistíocht chaipitiúil atá dírithe do thograí bhonneagar ar mhaithe leis an Ghaeilge. Tagann sé seo anuas ar thograí éagsúla eile curtha i bhfheidhm ag Sinn Féin maidir leis an Ghaeilge ar na mallaibh, infheistíocht chaipitiúil suntasach aimsithe ag an iar-aire Oideachais sa Tionól, Catríona Ruane san áireamh. Bíodh san mar atá, caithfidh muid a bheith ag troid ar son na Gaeilge i gcónaí – ar dhá thaobh an teorann d’ár ndóigh - má táimíd dáiríre fúithi.

I measc na hábhair á bplé Dé Sathairn ná: Polasaí Shinn Féin i leith na Gaeilge, An Straitéis Fiche Bliain don Ghaeilge, Acht na Gaeilge don Tuaisceart, Ceantair Gaeltachtaí agus ag athstruchtúrú Earnáil na Gaeilge.
Beidh cainteoirí ann ón pháirtí agus ina measc Piaras Ó Dochartaigh TD, Gearóid Ó hEára agus Cmhlr. Críona Ní Dhálaigh.
Bígí linn!

‘Is í an Ghaeilge athghabháil na hÉireann agus is í athghabháil na hÉireann slánú na Gaeilge’ – Máirtín Ó Cadhain.
