A fresh perspective on Freshers.......

(SDLP Youth Get Pissed on "Reassuringly Expensive" Stella Artois at an Executive Meeting)

Be honest lads

I don’t know if any one pays much attention to the stoop mouth piece i.e. the Irish News, but the paper has gone into overdrive about the whole Fianna Fáil coming north thing.

You would swear it was Christmas for them! Their enthusiasm for the new ‘Wannabe Stoops’ (Fianna Failures) has even crossed over to the letters page, with every Stoop, Wannabe Stoop and West Brit in the country jumping on the bandwagon.

Even the Green Party have added their voice to the chorus, claiming, now wait for it, that they and Fianna Fáil ‘out performed’ Ógra Shinn Féin at the various Fresher fairs across the north. Who said that honesty was the best policy?

The magical number according to the Greens is 134. That is the totality of the Greens recruitment drive across the six counties. Fianna Fáil, according to the Greens only mustered 130 across the six, so close wannabe stoops, so close. It is this ‘staggering’ number that, according to the Wannabe Stoops and Greens out performed Ógra Shinn Féin.

Well, let’s start with the truth, because a very wise man once said that it was the ‘truth that will set you free’. Firstly Ógra Shinn Féin, Ireland’s largest, most active and fastest growing political movement did not under perform. The FACT is that in Queens University alone, ÓSF recruited 140 members. So in one campus alone we out performed both the Greens, Stoops and Wannabe
Stoops. Well done us! ÓSF 1 Stoops and wannabe’s 0

Secondly in Jordanstown Campus, Ógra Sinn Féin once again came top, the wannabes didn’t even show nor did the Greens, which only left the Stoops. The poor things only stayed for a while but gave up when only seven people signed up. We had 70, making the score at
half time: ÓSF 2 Stoops and Wannabe’s 0.

It was a similar situation in Coleraine, except apart from us, nobody else was there, I guess that would make it 3-0. St. Mary’s was the same with more people signing up to join ÓSF. Again, even with their, em, trying to think of something polite, ‘leader’ Mark Durkan, the stoops failed to make an impact. Apart from most people noticing that the Stoop members at St. Mary's were the same guys at Queens and Jordanstown!

Making it 4-0 at this critical stage of the game.

Now we can’t forget about Magee in Derry, this was where according to Emmett Doyle of the Wannabe Stoops, claimed to have had victory. He said "Even though Sinn Féin has been operating in the north for some time, we were considerably outstripping them.’’ But ye see Emmett, even the Stoops didn’t buy this one, never mind us. Making the score 5-0. It will be interesting to see in a few months time who is active on the ground and who is not. I can guarantee it will be Ógra Shinn Féin who will be leading the way, campaigning on issues that affect people on the ground.

Such as highlighting the disgusting treatment of the people of Rossport by the current Fianna Fáil and Green government. Or the planned desecration of one of Ireland’s most important historical sites: The Hill of Tara, what are Fianna Fáil and the Greens planning to do to our ancient capital? Bulldoze a bloody motorway through it. You can bet the Greens and wannabes
didn’t want those issues to be raised at freshers', but as good Republicans we did and will continue to do, So bring it on Stoops, wannabe stoops and anybody else for that matter, we relish the challenge!

By the way, final score Ógra Shinn Féin 5 The Stoop, Wannabe Stoop brown paper bag corruption alliance, that only recently realised the border didn’t stop at Ravensdale. - 0.

What about the coke, social democrats me hole.

aside from that we really dont need to brag about who recruited how many, lets make our actions count not our numbers because from a 32 county perspective we are small in comparison with FF.

"aside from that we really dont need to brag about who recruited how many, lets make our actions count not our numbers because from a 32 county perspective we are small in comparison with FF."

I take your point mo chara about the bragging but it is a satirical article and to be fair if you had listened to the gloating on northern radion stations and newspapers over the past 2 weeks you'd understand the response.

And lets be honest, FF may have more electoral support but we lead the way when it comes to genuine activism and community engagement.

The calibre of activists signing up for ÓSF compared to many others will be tested in the year ahead, i have no doubt who will be the most active and impacting.

I know this article is in reference to Universities in the 6 counties. However I just want to raise a point of what the back hander crew were give out during the freshers fairs in the free state
Take for instance my own University at NUI Maynooth,(OFF) were handing out proclamations of the republic they continue to betray, also they had the usual girls in tight tops and sweets to attract new comers(sad tactics if you ask me)

Great to say we performed well in Maynooth ourselves!! heres looking forward to an active year :D

emmett (harkin) doyle,(nephew of derrys stoop down fianna failer pat ramsey) who claims to have recruited 41 students at magee should now have them on the streets of derry this week protesting about the sell off of our resources to multi nationals (ie rossport and rockall)then again i personally dont believe they recruited that many students,so emmett (SDLP) Stop Diddling Lies Please and come into the real world, sinn fein are the only all ireland republican party, you'll find that out when you tell the stoop down lower coalition that you'r against selling out our resources (or are you?).dont go onto the football pitch mate without any balls.

I know the piece was meant to be tongue in cheek but it's a little harsh in places. Speaking for the Young Greens, we only claimed to have recruited the most in QUB, and if we were mistaken in that we apologise. Unfortunately with our limited resources we could not realistically expand into all of the U of U cammpuses this year but hope to do so next year.

Whilst I might agree with your synopsis of the FF attempt to set up in the North, the Green Party have been unified since 2005 and are hardly new to northern politics. We were under the impression also that cross border initiatives and organisation were welcomed by the nationalist community, and for that we've been very grateful.

Despite the decision to enter government, the Young Greens do not support the routing of the M3 through Tara, nor a whole host of other measures passed by the government. We do however support the essence of coalition government - that each party gets some of its policies whilst having to give way on others, as FF are having to do on things like waste, transport, foreign affairs, etc.

Lastly, as we're only getting set up at Queens, we're looking forward to working positively with OSF and the other youth wings as we've always managed to do on the national level; it's always seemed that we as parties agree on far more issues than we disagree.

Best of luck for the year

Young Greens National Chair

Eddiepops, firstly I appreciate your opinion on this matter and secondly I totally agree that organisations such as ÓSF and the Greens work together on issues of importance. The reason why this piece was written and a letter sent into the Irish News was in response to a number of letter writers and commentators who were attempting to portray the illusion that in particular Fianna Fáil were out performing ÓSF in recruitment. A number of these comments were also extremely hostile to the work Ógra are involved in. The Reason why the Greens were mentioned, was in direct response to a letter written By John Hardy in the Irish News of the South Down branch of the Green party. Who claimed that not only were Ógra 'beaten' by FF. but also the Greens. The number element didn't particularly bother but, his letter seemed to suggest that the Young Greens were in collusion with FF. in their attempt to portray Ógra as a weakened organisation. Which is totally untrue.
The main thrust of this piece was aimed at the SDLP and Fianna Fáil. As I have said previously the only reason the Greens were mentioned was in direct response to the letter published in the Irish News. I thank you for your response and hope that to much offence was not caused to the Greens as the main focus of this article was aimed at F. and the SDLP.
