Protest arrests of Batasuna Leadership

On the 4th of October the National Executive of Batasuna, the Basque independence party, were arrested by the Spanish police at a meeting in Segura. This represents a great disrespect on thepart of the Spanish Government for the crisis prone Basque peace process and the fact that it is still their firm belief that the Basque people have no right to freedom and democracy.
Tomorrow, 13th of October at 1pm, the Irish Basque Solidarity Committee in conjunction with Ógra Shinn Féin will hold a protest outside the GPO to highlight the injustice of these arrests and the continued repression of nationalists in the Basque country.
Ógra Átha Cliath spokesperson Oisín Ó Dubhláin had this to say:
"The Basque people and the independence movement Batasuna have suffered too long at the hands of the Spanish government. They have been beaten, abused, repressed and imprisoned, as they attempt to bring a peaceful conclusion to the campaign for a Basque nation. We call on the Spanish government to release the leadership of Batasuna and the youth movement SEGI and the repeal of laws which have made legitimate political movement with widespread support among Basques, an illegal "terrorist" organisation"
