In the H-Blocks of Long Kesh and Armagh gaol the prisoners refused to wear the prison uniform because they knew that by doing so they would be accepting criminality and criminalisation of the entire republican struggle.
If our generation now endorses the wearing of the RUC/psni uniform under the Saint Andrews agreement, we will be endorsing and accepting the British occupation of Ireland .
Under the deal we will be asking nationalists and republicans to not only work in a proactive way with the state police, but to work hand in hand with MI5. As MI5 prepare to take over in the north in what BBC news has described as “the lead role in intelligence involving national security by the end of 2007” in their new headquarters near Hollywood, County Down.
As a republican I view my role to be one of challenging the status quo, were the police is one of up holding it.
In the current climate were MI5 are getting their claws deeper imbedded in Ireland and were devolution of policing powers seem a long way off in “spring 2008”, my view on the two governments agreement is Never Never Never!

Two things to consider Eugene.
The Hunger Strikes achieved nothing until the remaining prisoners worked the system from the inside for their own ends. The big escape would never have happened until the participants built on what they’d gained in the wake of the Hunger Strikes.
The St Andrew’s deal is not asking anyone to work hand in hand with MI5, but rather presenting another opportunity to consolidate and move forward, rather than sticking with the entrenched position that gives us nothing but the status quo.
Maybe I'm being naive but surely Sinn Fein already accepted the "British Occupation of the North" when they accepted and recognised the Dail, Westminster and Stormont? Was it not the acceptance of these Parliaments and the scaling down of military activity that led to the 1971 split? Was it not the Provisional wing of the Republican movement that refused to countenance such acceptance and recognition?
Eugene, you may be a Republican but your not singing from the pragmatists hymn sheet.

i have suffered badly at the hands of the ruc during the period of the late 70,s and right through the eighties,but in recent years we have been in the position of power were we could help to make change,that change has only come about because people in leadership were imaginative and creative and have now given the younger generations reasons to live for ireland as opposed to dieing for ireland.i suffered so that you young ones could have a better future and to give you better choices on how to bring about change,therefore creating circumstances were protestant,catholic and dissenter will eventually decide that they can live together in a 32 county ireland.people forget that everyone suffered,no matter what side they were on and no matter what side of the border they were on,the gardai were just as brutal.a lot of honesty from eugene whom i have met at residentials before and respect,but i hope he has the sense to be brave and walk strong with the rest of us towards a better ireland,warts and all. former (3 times)prisoner.DERRY CITY
