Ógra activists take part in protest against Corrib gas refinery in Bellanaboy

Last Friday, June 29th, was the second anniversary of the imprisonment of the Rossport Five.

Despite the ongoing controversy, danger to human, plant and animal life and appalling exploitation of our country’s natural resources the construction of the pipeline is still going ahead with Friday seeing the last of the peat bog being removed from the area.

At 7.30am a group of around 40 protestors gathered at the gates of the refinery. Over 200 hundred members of an Garda Siochana were present and it was soon made apparent whose side these ‘shell cops’ were on.

Spokesperson for Ógra Shinn Féin Áine Ni Dhubháin said:

“The level of corruption in Bellanaboy is absolutely appalling. Protestors, demonstrating the basic civil right to free speech were subjected to harassment, bullying and unprovoked violence from the very people whose job is to protect the public. One demonstrator was arrested and another was picked up and thrown into a 6ft ditch.”
