Kilkenny gets the message 'Free SEGI!'

Thug Ógra Shinn Féin ar na sráideanna den gcéad uair ón dtoghchán. Tháinig an gníomhaíocht seo i ndiadh cruinniú ÓSF i gCill Choinnigh. Tá Ógra Shinn Féin réidh arís chun tabhairt faoi gnó mór na polaitíochta. An tseachtain seo chugain reachtálfar deireadh seachtain bliaintiúl Ógra Shinn Féin i gCill Choinnigh. Beidh mórshúil Dé Sathairn sa chathair agus go leor caint agus comhrá tríd an deireadh seachtain ar fad.

Ógra Shinn Féin took to the streets of Kilkenny last Friday petitioning shoppers in the town for their support to have the National Executive of Basque youth movement SEGI released. The ÓSF action comes just over a month after the recent general election. This election saw a marked increase for Sinn Féin in the constituency, providing an excellent springboard for '09 local elections.

The action followed a constituency-wide Ógra meeting which acted as the catalyst for a return to political activism for the Republican youth wing. The meeting witnessed political debate, comradely discussion, and outlined plans for the coming months. In Kilkenny last Friday, Ógra Shinn Féin Ceatharlach / Cill Choinnigh committed themselves to continued growth, increased political actions, and above all, making politics relevant to young people in Carlow / Kilkenny.

The first step on this road would be the annual Kilkenny Youth Weekend scheduled to take place in the city this weekend coming. The aim of the weekend is to educate young people around republican history and politics, as well as encompassing elements like the Irish Language and culture, environmentalism, and internationalism. The central part of the weekend is the Republican march through the streets of Kilkenny. This march was extremely successful last year attracting many onlookers as it passed through the city. This year's march will be leaving from the train station at 2 o' clock. It will pass through the city and arrive outside Kilkenny Castle where the assembled crowd will be addressed by a prominent guest speaker.

It was with a view to the coming weekend that ÓSF brought the SEGI petition to the streets. Next week a delegation from the Basque youth movement will attend and ÓSF want to express their continued solidarity. Speaking about the arrest of the SEGI National Executive local organiser of Ógra in Kilkenny Peadar de Bluit said that,

"The continued incarceration of the SEGI National Executive is an indictment of the undemocratic, draconian measures so-called democratic governments are willing to employ under the guise of a war on terror. Ógra Shinn Féin sends solidarity greetings to our comrades in the Basque Country, and look forward to the resolution of this incident."
