Independent International Enquiry to Uncover the Truth

Pat Finucane. A name everyone knows. The 39 year old solicitor was shot dead in front of his family by Unionist Death Squad in 1989. His killing remains the most controversial murders throughout the modern conflict.

This week the PPS has stated that no RUC or British soldiers will be charged. This decision is outrageous and has been slammed by Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson John McDermott.

“Pat Finucane was killed by the UDA/UFF in his home on 12 February 1989, who acted in collusion with British military intelligence group the FRU, or Force Research Unit. The 3 main players in the Pat Finucane killing were FRU agents, working under the direction of the British military. Brian Nelson, an agent since 1987 had been given specific directions from his handlers. His remit was to infiltrate the UDA, and ensure the targeting of ‘legitimate targets’. Brian Nelson passed the personal details of Pat Finucane over to Ken Barret. Barret, a special branch agent, was also working within the UDA. It was Barret that picked the execution team for that night. Barret has spoken about how he received a phone call from a police officer on the 12th February telling him that the road was all clear, and that it was safe for Barret to proceed with the planned killing.

“After the murder, Barret returned to the UDA Quartermaster William Stobie and handed over the browning 9mm pistol that was used to kill Pat Finucane. Stobie was also an RUC Special Branch informer, under the direct control of MI5. Stobie disposed of the weapon used to execute Mr. Finucane.

“Both MI5 and the FRU are organisations directly answerable and under the direction the British prime minister. To say that the Crown Forces are innocent is more than unbelievable. I am in no doubt that it was the British military are directly responsible for this brutal killing.

“The "Stevens Three" report published in 2003 stated that rogue elements within the RUC and military in 'Northern Ireland' helped Unionist paramilitaries to murder Catholics in the late 1980s. However, in a statement on Monday, the Public Prosecution Service said no further prosecution would be brought against any individual.

“The Finucane family have been told that the state were involved in the murder of Pat, however they are now being told nothing will be done about it. This is a complete and utter disgrace, the British government have blood on their hands, we DEMAND that there be an independent international inquiry to uncover the truth.”
