End European Union Support For Occupation!

Yesterday, Friday the 1st of June Ógra activists along with other groups and the Irish Palestinian Solidarity Campaign took part in an occupation and protest at the offices of the European Commission in Dublin.

The action was organised in the run up to the 40th anniversary of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in Palestine. These forty years have been filled with murder, land theft, detention without trial and the demolition of countless Palestinian homes. Despite this disgusting record of imperialist oppression by Israel the international community has to a large extent either remained quiet or supported this occupation. The E.U. Commission has overuled the E.U. Parliament and allowed the continuation of support for Israel and the chastisement of Palestine.

A number of activists gained entry to the offices and handed out literature to staff on the complicity of the E.U. Commission in the oppression and occupation of Palestine. They were then questioned by a member of the Gardaí and physically forced out of the building with the help of security guards. This peaceful occupation lasted little more than ten minutes, while the brutal occupation in Palestine has been allowed to continue for four decades. A protest was also held outside and leaflets were distributed to passers by and onlookers.

David a leading member of the IPSC had stated,

" The EU supports the occupier and punishes the occupied. Specifically, we were protesting against EU policy of enforcing sanctions on the Palestinian people in the Occupied Territories, while offering major trade privileges to Israel, the occupying power. The Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreement offers trade and other privileges to Israel, which helps it sustain its economy and maintain its occupation of Palestine. This is despite the fact that Israel is in clear breach of the human rights clause of this agreement."

Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson Áine Ní Dhubháin said,

"Ógra supports the right of the Palestinian people to self determination, freedom and security. The E.U. Commission has aligned itself with the imperialist aggressor and against this brutalised and oppressed nation, and must be denounced. We must stand shoulder to shoulder with all the people of the world who bare the brunt of imperialism, be it in Derry, Bilbao or the West Bank. Ógra and Sinn Féin will continue to work for the removal of the British occupation at home but also as internationalists, in order to smash imperialism wherever it rears its ugly head!"

The IPSC has also organised a demonstration for the 40th anniversary of the occupation on Saturday the 9th of June in Dublin, if you would be interested in helping out please e-mail dublinogra@gmail.com and remember to visit www.ipsc.ie
