Ógra Activists Tour Crumlin Road Jail

Ógra Shinn Féin activists visited Crumlin Road Jail this past weekend. The tour organised by ÓSF An Lorgain, gave activists the opportunity to visit the famous old jail and even walk the infamous tunnel, between the Court House and the Jail.

Activists were particularly humbled to visit the execution chamber, were republican Tom Williams was hanged in 1942.

Ógra activist Stephen Scullion commented,

“Today’s tour proved very successful. The history of the Jail stretches over 150 years, and is of particular interest for the history of executions in the jail. Vol. Tom Williams was executed there in 1942, and would remain there until his body was re-interned in 2000 after a long campaign by republicans. It was quite a moving experience.”
He continued,

“The more recent history of the Jail including the status of Political Prisoners was also interesting. ‘The Crum’ was a common place for republican prisoners on remand in the latest phase of struggle.”

“Overall the tour proved highly educational and enjoyable.”
