Show of support for Gaza on Donegal / Tyrone Border

Over 70 people took part in a protest organised by Strabane Ógra Shinn Féin on the Lifford road in Strabane today, Friday 4th June. Ógra Shinn Féin organised the whiteline picket in response to the recent attacks by the Israeli Defence Forces, on civilian aid ships carrying much needed supplies to the besieged area of Gaza .

The protest was addressed by Derry city Sinn Féin councillor Gerry Mac Lochlainn, who has visited Gaza many times . Gerry gave the assembled crowd an explicit account of the horrific conditions that the people of Gaza are forced to endure because of the Israeli blockade both on land and at sea. He called on everyone to step up their efforts in the days ahead to ensure that pressure is brought to bear on the Israeli government to allow the Irish aid ship the ‘Rachel Corrie’ to complete it’s mission of delivering much needed humanitarian aid. Throughout the protest hundreds of passing motorists sounded their horns in support, on this busy ‘border’ crossing.

Speaking after attending the protest, Strabane Ógra activist Paddy Breslin said;

"It is important that the international community stand in solidarity with the oppressed people of Palestine at this time. We the Irish people know full well the reality of living under the jackboot of oppression, and support from other countries around the world is crucial during times of strife."

"We in Ógra Shinn Féin would call on the people to boycott Israeli goods being sold in local shops and attend protests and vigils in their local area in support of the Palestinian people"
