Inaugural Sheena Campbell Memorial Lecture

The Sheena Campbell Ógra Shinn Féin Cumann, in Queen’s University Belfast, recently held the first annual Sheena Campbell Memorial Lecture.

Aine Connolly first read out a short biography of Sheena Campbell.

The lecture was addressed by prominent Republican activist Eibhlin Glenholmes, and was also attended by members of Sheena’s family; including her son Caolan a former member of the Cumann, as well as her fiancé Brendan, and Mum and Dad, Patsy and Jean.

Eibhlin Glenholmes delivered a moving tribute to Sheena, highlighting her overwhelming contribution to the Republican struggle despite her young age. This was followed by a happy tribute and recollection from Brendan, Sheena’s fiancé. Brendan himself a Sinn Féin activist, recalled the more personal memories which were both entertaining and inspiring.

Speaking of the lecture Ógra activist Grace Lynch said,

“Today we had a day of memorial events for one of the leading Republican activists of the last decades. Sheena Campbell a young woman, a mother and a revolutionary continues to inspire Republicans throughout Ireland.”

Ms Lynch continued,

“I was delighted at the turn out for the lecture, but felt particularly privileged that Sheena’s family attended. Our Cumann proudly continues the work and struggle of Sheena.”

The lecture concluded with a presentation of a plaque to Sheena’s family, from Ógra Shinn Féin.

“Sheena Campbell was killed because she was a Republican, because she was a woman and because she was a leader of our struggle”- Gerry Adams
