Martin Meehan, an Inspiration to Irish Youth!

Ógra Shinn Féin send sympathy and condolences to the Meehan family on the death of Martin.

Martin Meehan, a life long republican, a soldier, a community man, a councillor and always an activist.

The story of Martin Meehan is one of activism, of struggle and hardship, yet Martin with huge resilience overcame the oppression to become one of the most respected and affable republicans.

He was a former prisoner, a hungerstriker and even managed to escape from prison such was his ingenuity.

In recent years Martin demonstrated his grounded work ethic approach to council duties and was prominent in setting the groundwork for Unionist outreach and conflict resolution having in particular met with the British Soldier who arrested and almost killed him.

Bobby Sand’s wrote ‘Everyone has their part to play.’ Martin Meehan followed that to the last, playing a huge part in building the Republican Movement and Sinn Féin into the organisation it is today.

It is because of people like Martin Meehan we have achieved so much and it is his memory which will inspire us to complete the task.

Forever an inspiration to Irish Republican Youth.

Just read a recent article documenting the recent passing of Martin Meehan. I'm sure his family, friends and comrades are in mourning at the moment and I feel the most sincere sympathy for them.

In reading the accounts of his life, including his hiding in a man-hole for 6 1/2 hours covered in butter, I couldn't help recall a thought I've had more times than I can remember. It is this point that I wanted to share with each of you this morning.

More than any other struggle across the globe, the struggle of the Republican Movement in Ireland has captivated and inspired me, MANY fellow members of the American Indian Movement (AIM), our comrades with the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) in Chiapas, Mexico, and countless thousands of struggling peoples around the world. I have always felt that the struggle in Ireland is a beacon of light inspiring hope for causes on an international scale and has become a barometer by which we judge our own successes, goals and achievements. In short, you've set the standard.

My hat's off to each of you in admiration and respect. It is a sincere privilege to know you. All God's blessings for you and your families.

Aho/ Go Raibh maith agut,
Dave Bailey of the 'free leonard peltier campaign' IRELAND
