Strabane Ógra Launch Mural in Memory of Loughgall Martyrs

Tuesday 8th May marks the 20th anniversary of the Loughall ambush. In light of this anniversary, Strabane Ógra Shinn Féin has unveiled a mural in the town Centre.

Speaking at the unveiling spokesperson for Strabane OSF John McDermott said: “This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Loughgall ambush. This ambush epitomises the brit shoot to kill policy that was in place at this time. Although the SAS had the town, and the barracks under surveillance, the volunteers were able to enter the town with no problems. The SAS had set the trap and they lay in wait.”

“Thousands of rounds were fired by the SAS killing all 8 members of the IRA Vol. Eugene Kelly, Vol. Paddy Kelly Vol. Jim Lynagh, Vol. Padraig McKearney, Vol. Seamus Donnelly and Vol. Tony Gormley Vol. Declan Arthurs and Vol. Gerard O’Callaghan, and 1 civilian, Anthony Hughes. Anthony’s brother was also shot and fatally wounded, however survived.”

The spokesman continued “We erected this mural to commemorate the lives of these brave volunteers. The desire for Irish freedom was prominent in these men’s lives, and in an attempt to rid their country of injustices they took the fight to the brits.“

“The younger generation owe a great debt to all the spirited volunteers of Oglaigh Na hEireann, whose determination to achieve nation freedom and justice led them to wage war against the powerful oppressive british government. We salute these men, and we stand united in thanking the Loughgall martyrs, and the volunteers of Oglaigh Na hEireann for their contribution to our lives. We as young people should always acknowledge the bravery and selflessness of our comrades who have gone before us.”
