Ireland's History is Not For Sale

The Comhairle Naisiúnta of Ógra Shinn Féin has expressed their anger and disappointment at the decision to once again auction off pieces of Irish history to private interests. The sale of these items at Adams & Sons in Dublin yesterday was yet another indicator of the Dublin government’s failure to properly ensure the culture and history of our great nation is preserved for the enjoyment and education of all its people.

Ógra Shinn Féin alongside Sinn Féin picketed this disgraceful sale of our history and called for steps to be put in place to ensure that never again will national treasures like one of P.H. Pearse’s final letter, an original print of James Connolly’s “The Re-Conquest of Ireland” and the Declaration of Independence of the 1st Dáil be sold into private hands away from the people of Ireland.

We would also like to recognise the work of those who have preserved these items over the years when government after government had consigned them to the dustbin of history and forced them into private sale.

Ógra spokesperson Oisín Ó Dubhláin commented,

“These items which range greatly in age and uniqueness are the property of the Irish people, and should be preserved in their name for their benefit. We thank those who have worked to keep our history alive and deeply regret and condemn the Dublin government’s lack of interest.”

Fair play - great protest!

Good news that it was bought by the National Museum, but if these things 'appear' in private sales surely the government should exercise its authority and ensure that these remain/brought back into public ownership.

Well done for organising the protest.
