West Tyrone ÓSF announce Day of Action for Basque Youth

Ógra Shinn Féin in West Tyrone has revealed plans to hold a day of Action on Saturday (14th April) as part of the A.R.I.S.E. campaign and to show solidarity with the Basque youth organisation Segi.

Segi recently have been deemed as a ‘terrorist organisation’ by the Spanish judiciary. This has led to the mass arrest and imprisonment of its leadership in the Basque region. There have been demonstrations both in the Basque country and Ireland at the ruling.

Ógra Shinn Féin National Executive have already forwarded a letter of support to the Basque youth movement. In the letter Ógra pledged to continue to support and highlight the plight of the imprisoned leadership of Segi. Indeed Ógra are currently planning a mobilisation to the Basque country in support for their comrades in Eukal Herria.

Speaking ahead of the day of action Ógra Shinn Féin International Officer Ian Breslin said,

“Ógra Shinn Féin have always supported and called for freedom and independence for the Basque Region. We have worked alongside our international comrades in Jarrai, Haika and Segi and have build up strong links with these youth organisations. The ruling by the Spanish courts that somehow Segi are a ‘terrorist organisation’ is ridiculous."

"However imperialism knows no boundaries and we have seen this type of obstruction being used in Ireland against republicans. We will continue to pledge our support for the right of the Basque people to freedom and independence. Indeed I have recently returned from the Basque country to show the support of Ógra at this time for our international comrades. Freedom and independence for the Basque country!”
