You’re being posted to Crossmaglen........

The words every British solider didn't want to hear, for this was no ordinary posting. Crossmaglen was the most feared overseas out-post in a foreign land in British history. At no time did any British troops feel safe in what came to be known as "bandit country" and at the ‘heart of bandit’ country was Crossmaglen.

Even the lay of the land lent a hand in the fight for Irish freedom, providing cover and perfect ambush opportunities for the famous fighting men from ...........; claymores, booby traps and road side bombs soon meant that travel into bandit country was limited to the air.

However this didn't mean they were safe, as helicopters soon started to fall as well, but the biggest fear was one they could do nothing about, The Armagh sniper was deadly [accurate] and claimed the lives of many troops but most of all put the fear of god in every British solider every time they walked the streets of our land.

As part of the demilitarisation program under the Good Friday Agreement, the British government have finally lived up to their commitment and pulled their war machine out of Crossmaglen.

Damian White of Ogra Shinn Fein Armagh said,

"I welcome the fact the war machine has finally been removed from Crossmaglen understanding that this has been an important site in the struggle, I would urge republicans not to forget that this is only the start of British disbandment in Ireland, and there is much more to be done.”

” I also welcome the effect this move will have on the local people, on the economy through tourism, and on the name Crossmaglen. A people rich in culture and sporting ability and a landscape of out-standing beauty, and now with-out British oppression to hold them back, the future will be of their making, in solemn remembrance of the past and a strong will and desire to make the future prosperous for the whole community."
