Sheena Campbell Ógra Shinn Féin remember the Hungerstrikers at Long Kesh

The Sheena Campbell Ógra Shinn Féin cumann at Queens University visited Long Kesh last Friday.

A number of cumann activists toured the former concentration camp which had thousands of republican's imprisoned behing its walls throughout the modern conflict in Ireland.

The 'prison' once described as the most secure prison in Western Europe was also scene to a famous prison break by 38 IRA prisoners in 1983 and was tragicall the symbol of British Intrangience across the world when 10 Irish Republican prisoners where allowed to die on Hungerstrike in 1981.

Grace Lynch speaking of the tour said,

"We as young republicans travelled to Long Kesh to visulaise the horror of the place which we have read about. We also paid homage to the bravery of the Hungerstrikers and the thousands of prisoners who where held captive in awful conditions for years on end."

"The resistance and resilience of republican prisoners was a catalyst in our struggle and their memory is a constant source of inspiration for us in our daily actions. I would urge other Ógra cumann to organise a tour to Long Kesh because although tragic it is utterly inspiring!"

This was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

Puts everything in perspective when you consider the sacrifice made by brave volunteers like Bobby Sands.
