Failte abhaile Gerry

(Gerry leaving Castlerea this morning)

Ógra Shinn Féin has welcomed the release of Gerry Sheehy from Castlerea Jail on Monday morning.

Speaking after his release Ógra Shinn Fein spokesperson Barry McNally said

“We welcome the release of Gerry Sheehy after many years behind prison walls. We wish him all the best in the future.

“Gerry should have been released under the conditions of the Good Friday agreement. He, along with other political prisoners in Castlerea clearly qualified for early release; however the Dublin government broke their word and continue to hold Republican POWs who qualify for early release. Today Gerry has walked free as an unbowed and unbroken Irish Republican.

“We in Ógra will continue to campaign for the release of republican POWS until the day each one of them are free. We will also be campaigning for the abolition of so called criminal records for those imprisoned throughout the conflict in Ireland. Had it not been for the political situation in Ireland, many of those men and women wouldn’t have seen the inside of a prison cell.”

In December 2006 Gerry, along with Pierce McCauley, who is still imprisoned in Castlerea, took court action aimed at securing their release. However the action failed and the POWs were refused release. Gerry’s release this morning leaves Limerick man Kevin Walsh and Tyrone native Pierce McCauley as the only two Republican POWs still imprisoned in Castlerea.

"Ógra will continue to campaign for the release of republican POWS until the day each one of them are free. We will also be campaigning for the abolition of so called criminal records for those imprisoned throughout the conflict in Ireland" - also, let's not forget those who are still 'on the run' and consequently cannot return to their own homes, Sinn Féin's silence on the recent release of Republican POWs and outstanding OTR cases is questionable at best, and I would hope that Ógra Shinn Féin would take a more proactive stance and agitiate for more action on these cases within the party.

Great to see. And also I would take issue with the above comments.

It has been the strenght of SF negotiating that has won these men freedom.

Freedom for the remaining POW's.
