Ógra Shinn Féin produce Short Film on Basque Struggle

The youth wing of Sinn Féin has produced a short film of a recent mobilisation to the Basque Country. A short preview of the film has been uploaded to YouTube.

Ógra Shinn Féin sent a large delegation of activists to the Basque Country in September of 2007, the mobilisation was planned to demonstrate solidarity, raise awareness of the peace process and learn from the huge growth and organisation of Basque Youth.

While in the Basque Country, Ógra Shinn Féin travelled to political, social and cultural events across the oppressed nation, into both French and Spanish occupied territory.

At a ‘banned’ march in the picturesque town of Donostia, the Irish youth delegation also experienced at first hand the brutal oppression of the Spanish state when the state police opened indiscriminately on peaceful protestors.

In urging people to view and promote the short film, National Organiser of Ógra Shinn Féin, Barry McColgan said,

“The current situation in the Basque Country is alarming. The Spanish state has increased repression, arresting democratically elected Basque activists, banning legitimate political parties, and abducting and torturing many young people.”

“Ógra have produced this short film to raise awareness around the current plight of the Basque people, we would urge everyone to play their part by viewing and promoting the film to as many people as possible. We would also urge the general public to support any upcoming Basque Solidarity events.”
