Thousands attend Bloody Sunday march

The 36th anniversary of Bloody Sunday was marked by thousands in Derry on Sunday 4th February.

On January 30th 1972 the notorious British parachute regiment murdered 14 innocent civil rights marchers in Derry and injured many more. The shootings on Bloody Sunday took place against the backdrop of an anti internment march.

As Derry awaits the outcome of the Saville inquiry thousands of people assembled outside the Creggan shops to take part in the 36th annual parade. Many Ógra members attended the march. Doire Ógra Shinn Féin had hosted a weekend previous to the march and many Ógra members were in attendance.

The march made its way along the traditional route from the Creggan shops to Free Derry Corner. Before coming to Free Derry corner paintings of the 14 innocent people shot dead lined either side of the road until to procession had passed.

Speaking following the march, Barry McColgan, National Organiser of Ógra Shinn Féin said

“It is speculated that this march will be the last annual commemoration for the victims of Bloody Sunday. It is my opinion that unless Saville delivers the truth behind Bloody Sunday we will be back again here next year. We support the call of the families for the truth to be told, and they have made it clear that they won’t stop until the full truth is disclosed. Until it is Ógra Shinn Féin will stand with the families in their fight for the truth”
