Gerry Junior has learned that a certain Louth cumann have submitted a motion to this week’s Sinn Fein Ard Fheis which calls on Sinn Fein and Ogra activists to ‘refrain’ from using the historic republican phrase, ‘Brits Out!’
If successfully passed, the PC brigade will have young republicans calling on the British Army to please move from our land if you want, or it’s up to you, but we’d prefer if you left.Good luck with them explaining this to West Tyrone Ogra who just loved a bit of ‘Brits Out’, as the pictures demonstrate.
A recent programme by BBC, hosted by Martina Purdy looked at the top terms and slogans from the recent conflict, and in the Top 10 was ‘Brits Out’ and even the BBC recognized that it was the British Occupation that Republican’s where referring to.
If those opposed to the term ‘Brits Out’ turned on UTV last week they would have been deeply offended because the dreaded ‘Brits’ Awards where on.
Or maybe its not the term ‘Brits’ that is offensive, so here is some variations for our PC friends, Brits go, Brits leave when you want, Brits you have no right to be here, or maybe, just maybe Brits Stay??
Let common sense prevail and have this motion confined to the dustbin of history by giving it a resounding rejection, but just incase they get their way, here it is maybe for the last time before it is censored forever;

Im British and proud. I live in Aramgh but want to see a United Ireland. I personally find the term Brits out offensive. Do you want me to leave Ireland????? Why dont we say next that the blacks must go!!
Why din we just say british army out. James Connelly was a brit. Would we have sai to him to go home???? I thin not, he is not only a hero of Ireland but of all working class every where.
removing socialism from our objectives and now this. Brits out has been a revolutionary slogan of Irish Republicanism for a very long time. it is well known that this refers to the forigen forces of occupation and not your average british citizen residing here. if certain people are offended by this slogan, then thats exactly the kind of people its meant to fucking 'offend'.

there are elements in the party who wish to see change in the whole ethos of sf. we must stick to our revolutionary ideals and policies and keep our eye on the ball as far as our ultimate goal is concerned.
When the brits are 'outted' then-and only then should this term cease to be used!!

We should all be confident enough to explain what we mean by brits out! If people are offended by it we should explain it.
Ireland has room for everyone. But not for a government from a different country.

I am a repubican and proud and I will not use the term brits out for the same reason i will not say polish out, blacks out or travellers out. I will however say get the british war machine out now!! End british occupation now, buts lets be clear who we want out. Our fellow country people from a unionist bacground will count themselves british and us of the term brits out alineates them at a time when we shoud be reaching out to them to popularise the struggle.

Colleen there is nothing brave in making comments which can be interpreted as racist. If you read through Sinn Fein's objectives you would know one of them is to popularise the struggle. Now think about colleen, if we are saying to unionists we want all the british out do you really think that persuade them to desire a United Ireland instead?? Ogra Shinn Fein needs to be an agent of change in this country, not just a party of slogans.
Lets be clear, we want the British army and government out of our country. We do not however want people who live here and consider themselves british to leave here on a boat never to come back. Therefore the term Brits out is confusing
We are clear what we mean when we say Brits Out, we mean the British Gov and Army. 'Brits Out' is paraphrasing this and much easier to chant and dub on walls, as the song says,
"It was written on the walls Brits Out!"
Politics aside for 1 second, for purely propaganda reasons, Brits Out is a much easier term, I mean when the Bolsheviks said, 'Peace, Bread and Land' they knew what they meant, they didn't have to elaborate.
The only people who will take issue with Brits Out are those intentionally doing so.. I have Unionist friends who identify themselves as British, they have absolutely no problem with the term Brits Out.
BTW - Unionist Outreach doesn't mean becoming a Unionist.
And I have the decency to at least put in my first name, if your going to respond to me at least leave a name.

Colleen, if you are chanting 'Peace, Bread and Land' then yes everyone will know what you are on about and no one will be offended. If however you are chanting Polish out, british out, blacks out, then you are offending people and and ordinary people could interprete the wrong message. And by the way Colleen, just because I support Sinn Fein's objective to reach out to unionists does not make me any less of a Republican - I would love to know your thinking on how it does. Colleen you need to understand the only way we are going to achieve a United Ireland is if the majority of people on this island support Sinn Fein, and the only way to do that is by getting them to trust us and not believe all the propaganda the state has fed them for years. Think about it, if you have belived everything the NIO office and the various unionists leaders have said over the years you will believe that Sinn Fein wants nothing to do with people from a Unionst background, and may actually believe that they will be driven from this land if we take total power. Bearing in mind this thinking, what if that person then see's a march in their town with hundreds of people chanting brits outs or with banners saying brits out?? Can you really not see how this might contridict our obejctive of popularising the struggle?? Compare this to stating 'british war machine out' etc. Colleen let me make this clear to you - no where in our parties strategic national objectives does it say 'Must have catch slogans for chants'. As I have said before Colleen we need to be agents of change not a party of confusing slogans.

I suggest we keep the term Brits out for use at our own rallies and internal debates however for the sake of the bigger strategic picture i suggest for external media we do not use this term as it will alienate some of the people we want to target, that is a fact.
I think this is a really interesting debate. I am a student in QUB having moved here from Manchester. I believe that Ireland should be united. Why should Westminister have a say in how you govern your country, it is maddness. However when I see or hear the term 'brits out' I cant help but think these people want me out of this country. I think it would clarify the situation if youse stated that you meant British government out, british army out etc. On another note, as a political party youse are far more active than any party I have seen in England. I have to say I really like the idea of back to basics - street politics.M.Webb
I support Unionist Outreach completely and any Republican would, the national flag represents Green (Nationalist) White (Peace) and Organge (Unionists), I fully support bringing peace between the people of Ireland, but I still fail to see how Brits Out distorts this if we are clear what we mean.
Unionist outreach does not mean watering down our politics or what we say.

Colleen if you want I will send you a copy of Sinn Fein's national strategic objectives so you can read them for yourself. No where in it does it say that all people from a british background have to leave our country. However it does say we need to popularise the struggle. That means we need more people supporting it. To do that we need to reach out to all people in our island, unionists included. We need to explain to them that the unionist voice would be better heard in Dublin as opposed to England, and that we as Repulicans can deliver a better society, one in which everyone is equal reardless of colour, religion, ethic group, gender or income etc. However if we are saying your are not welcome in our country then how do you expect them to vote for us??? Think about this Colleen, Ian Paisley was asked as recent as last friday what he thought was the main reson for the DUP's success. He responded by stating the unionist people were afraid of living in a country governed by Sinn Fein. This is the mind set we need to change if we are going to win the peace. Do you really think we will change it by chanting brits out. Would you really risk alienating this part of our society for the sake of being clear in our message. Why do you not want to say British war machine out etc? In your own words you have said

The fact is 'brits out' is not clear, and it does not show what we mean, therefore using your own logic you cannot win this debate. As i said to you before we need to be a party that can deliver change, not one who just focuses on slogans.

By using the term brits out we are giving our enemies ammunition to shot us down with. That is crazy and playing into the fear factor the unionst leaders try to create. By the way Colleen just because Sinn Fein reach out to unionstists doesnt mean we are adopting their thinking. You have to realise this is all part of the bigger picture.

I agree with Colleen, Unionist Outreach cannot be achived or convinced to the Republican Community by denying who we are.
The people, or maybe its the person with multiple posts arguing against the term Brits Out is clearly in the minority view in SF, as the Ard Fheis overwhelmingly voted the banning of 'Brits Out' down.
Barry McElduff spoke in defence of the term, and the Ard Comhairle backed the term.
So are the AC, voting aganst the Sinn Féin Nat. Strategic Objectives? No! Because Brits Out is one of those objectives!
how is stating that we want everyone to live on this island equally denying who we are. I will again say, we should not use any racist comments in our party.

Put it like this. We are only in stormont as part of a bigger picture - It does not however mean we are any less republican. Using not racist slogans also does not make us any less republican
