Ógra to host Cuban ambassador

On Thursday, 15th April, Ógra Shinn Féin in Galway City are hosting a talk with the Cuban Ambassador to Ireland, Teresita Trujillo.

The event will take place in the Town Hall Theatre at 6pm and will incorporate a talk by the Ambassador about the current situation in Cuba along with a documentary showing which charts the first hand experiences of life in Cuba from the perspective of an Irish woman, Bernice Dwyer - a friend of Teresita - who worked as a journalist in Havana, Cuba for 10 years.

The Ambassador, who is currently serving a second term as her country’s representative in Dublin has been an out-spoken critic of the on-going American-imposed blockade in Cuba which directly affects the lives of ordinary people in the country.

Encouraging people to attend the event, local Ógra activist, Ian Daly had this to say, “It’s a fact the U.S. blockade remains intact in Cuba, one year into Obama’s presidency. The few steps taken last September by the American Administration relate to electoral promises easing the restrictions on travel and remittances to Cuba that were imposed on Cuban citizens living in the U.S. during the Bush Administration.
While welcoming those steps, it has been shown that they are insufficient and do not address the main issue, which is the blockade. The new Administration has reiterated on various occasions its intention to continue enforcing the blockade. U.S. Vice-President Joseph Biden, at the Summit of Progressive Leaders, held in Chile last March, even stated that the U.S. will maintain the embargo as a tool to apply pressure on Cuba.”

However, the Ambassador has also expressed how proud Cubans are of the huge achievements of the last 51 years of Revolution, which have impacted on every aspect of life, from health, education, secure employment and housing to the dignity and pride as citizens who have chosen their own social and political system and are determined to defend their sovereignty, their independence and their right to self determination.

The talk on Thursday will focus on a range of these topics so Irish republicans and socialists from around the country are encouraged to attend what should prove to be a highly informative and interesting talk followed by questions from the floor.

Bígí linn!
